Far too many people in this country rely on government assistance to put food on the table and to pay their bills. Teddy Roosevelt once stated:

"The first requisite of a good citizen in this Republic of ours is that he shall be able and willing to pull his own weight."

I think we would all agree that when needed, the government can offer a hand up, but we should not be giving handouts on which people become reliant. For instance, should welfare come with a work-training or volunteer stipulation for able-bodied working-age Americans? Should the SNAP program have a similar requirement? Let us know what you think.
