Ocasio-Cortez demands probe of Bronx ICE shooting and faults Target for helping agents

AOC demanded a full probe of a Bronx ICE shooting and blamed Target for aiding agents, even as the migrant faced gang claims and a long arrest record.

Federal agents shot 28-year-old migrant Oscar Belgal in the neck Thursday afternoon on Marble Hill Avenue in the Bronx while trying to take him into custody. A 5-year-old boy sat in the back seat and was not hurt.

The New York Post reported Belgal was treated at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, expected to survive, then moved late Thursday night in an unmarked ICE vehicle. Protesters filled the streets. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Mayor Zohran Mamdani responded by attacking ICE itself and demanding an end to enforcement in the city.

Belgal is no anonymous bystander. The Department of Homeland Security alleged ties to the Trinitarios gang. DHS also stated he has prior convictions for grand larceny plus multiple arrests for assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession. Federal investigators are looking at a possible link to a migrant moped gang that shot an off-duty Border Patrol agent at Fort Washington Park last year.

Those details did not slow the political response from the left. Ocasio-Cortez framed the custody attempt as proof that ICE has no place in New York or the country.

AOC labels ICE a “rogue” force and demands bodycam release

The congresswoman, a democratic socialist, issued her statement Thursday night. She called the shooting a “grave development” and insisted the city needed an immediate response.

Ocasio-Cortez said:

“ICE’s already unwelcome presence in our city has been growing more escalatory and dangerous by the day. Today’s shooting is a grave development that requires a swift and immediate response to protect the safety of all New Yorkers,”

She then listed her demands. First came a full independent investigation and the immediate release of all body-camera footage. She did not wait for those results before rendering her larger verdict on the agency.

Ocasio-Cortez declared:

“ICE is a rogue, lawless paramilitary and surveillance agency,”

She added that the agency “does not belong in New York City and it should not exist in the United States of America. Abolish ICE.” The call to abolish the agency sat beside her demand for an investigation, not after any completed review of what happened in the car on Marble Hill Avenue.

Target denies any deal with immigration agents

Ocasio-Cortez also turned on a major retailer. She accused Target of letting ICE use Bronx properties as staging sites and said the company must stop.

She stated:

“In addition, the Target Corporation must stop offering their Bronx properties as private staging sites for ICE, in compliance with requests from New York officials,”

She went further, saying Target’s opening of large retail parking lots for what she called “paramilitary activity” was unacceptable and put the whole community at risk. A Target store sits about half a mile from the shooting scene; other businesses use the same area.

A Target representative answered Friday and rejected the charge outright. The company said it has no cooperative agreements with ICE or any other immigration enforcement agency. The denial left AOC’s staging claim standing as an accusation without the retailer’s agreement.

Mayor Mamdani presses to halt ICE work citywide

Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined the attack on enforcement. He described the situation as unconscionable and said he had already called the president. When they speak, he said, he will demand an end to all ICE enforcement actions in New York City.

Mamdani said:

“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities,”

He also said he tried to negotiate Belgal’s release. The mayor has called for ICE to be abolished. In plain terms, city leadership moved to shield the wounded man from federal custody and to roll back the agency’s ability to operate at all inside the five boroughs.

Criminal record and gang claims sit beside the political outrage

NYPD identified the man as Oscar Belgal. DHS laid out the alleged Trinitarios connection and the list of prior convictions and arrests. Those facts arrived in the same reporting cycle as the shooting itself. Agents were attempting a custody operation when the shots were fired. The 5-year-old in the back seat walked away uninjured. Belgal was expected to survive his neck wound.

What precipitated the use of force remains unclear in the available accounts. No body-camera footage has been described as released. The absolute calendar dates behind the “Thursday” and “Friday” references are not fixed in the reporting beyond the sequence of events. Still, the core sequence is plain: a custody attempt, a shooting, hospital treatment, an ICE transfer, street protests, and immediate demands from AOC and the mayor to investigate the agents while shutting down the agency and freeing the subject.

Ocasio-Cortez treated Target parking lots and ICE’s presence as the danger to New Yorkers. She did not center Belgal’s alleged gang ties, grand larceny conviction, or arrests for assault, robbery, drugs, and weapons. Mamdani cast ICE agents as the ones terrorizing communities and sought a citywide halt to their work. Both officials reached for abolition language while the wounded man moved from a hospital bed into federal custody.

Lawful residents and taxpayers in the Bronx live with the results when immigration enforcement is painted as the threat and criminal records are treated as secondary. Agents who try to take a suspect with that background into custody get hit with calls for investigation and abolition before the facts of the shooting are fully aired. That is the choice on display.
