Today’s thought was about the judiciary in this country trying to interpret the Constitution for current conditions, in essence, treating it like a living, breathing document, rather than what it meant when written. The late Justice Antonin Scalia addressed this problem when he was alive, and I asked our readers how they felt about it. Our comment today comes from Douglas R. from Tennessee, who responded:
“Justice Scalia was the greatest legal mind of our time because he understood one simple truth: a ‘living’ Constitution is just a fancy term for a meaningless one. If the Constitution changes based on what a judge feels is right for ‘modern times,’ then it isn't a law at all; it's just a suggestion."
“The Founders wrote it to be a rock-solid foundation to protect our God-given rights from the whims of the majority. When liberals try to make it ‘breathe,’ they are really just trying to suffocate our liberties.”
I agree completely, Douglas, and I think members of Congress today need a refresher course on the true meaning of the Constitution. It is not simply a suggestion. It is the framework for this country, and it cannot be ignored.
