Some people have a problem with the way Donald Trump reacted to the news of Nancy Pelosi's retirement and to the death of Dick Cheney, but I do not. If Cheney and his daughter had their way, Trump would be behind bars. And as far as Pelosi goes, has she ever had anything nice to say about the president? And does anyone think that if the situation were reversed, liberals would say something nice about him?

The question I posed to readers today was whether the GOP should hold firm or give in to Democrats on the shutdown. The response was overwhelmingly slanted toward holding firm, and this comes from some people who have been personally impacted by the shutdown.

“Hold firm, 100%. That letter was a complete joke, designed for Twitter, not for serious governance. They aren't interested in a solution; they're interested in a soundbite."
“If the President meets with them now, it just rewards their childish political theater. Don't give them the photo op.”
I agree with you, Joel, as I think this is nothing more than a game for Democrats, but I also think the GOP has to be smart about how this is handled, as I have outlined in several reports. Republicans can hold firm while continuing to apply pressure to Dems by forcing them to vote “no.”
