Today, I asked our readers about out-of-control holiday spending, which reminded me of the way Congress spends our tax dollars, and how we could better train people not to dig themselves a holiday hole. Preston T. from Louisiana responded:

“The comparison to Congress is spot on. We have developed a culture that believes credit cards are free money and that ‘want’ equals ‘need.’ People aren't victims of the economy when they are buying 80-inch TVs on credit; they are victims of their own lack of discipline."

“We have lost the virtue of self-denial in this country. Everyone wants the lifestyle they see on Instagram instantly, without putting in the work or saving the money first. If we want to fix the national debt, we need to start by teaching fiscal responsibility at our own kitchen tables.”

I agree completely. Whatever happened to living within your means rather than beyond them? But I also blame social media for some of this, or I should say the addiction to social media, because as soon as people see someone else with “it,” they want “it.”
