The feud between Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Donald Trump is alive and well.
It was reignited over Trump’s recent drug boat strikes as well as by a massive fraud scheme that was exposed relating to COVID-19 funding in the lawmaker's home state of Minnesota.
Now, Trump is suggesting that Omar is an illegal immigrant who should be removed from this country.
Trump started to conduct military strikes against alleged drug boats on Sept. 2.
Days after the first strike, Omar spoke out against them, writing, “I strongly condemn the Trump Administration’s lawless and reckless actions in the Southern Caribbean.”
Her statement continued, “Congress has not declared war on Venezuela, or Tren de Aragua, and the mere designation of a group as a terrorist organization does not give any President carte blanche to ignore Congress’s clear Constitutional authority on matters of war and peace.”
The statement concluded, “Trump and Rubio’s apparent solution, to make it even more militarized, is doomed to fail. Worse, it risks spiraling into the exact type of endless, pointless conflict that Trump supposedly opposes.” (To read her full statement, click here.)
Trump soon fired some shots at Omar, mocking her for quoting the Constitution and for serving in Congress. Trump stated, “I look at somebody that comes from Somalia, where they don’t have anything -- they don’t have police, they don’t have military, they don’t have anything. All they have is crime -- and she comes in and tells us how to run our country.”
Omar responded on X, posting, “Unlike you, I can read and that’s why I know what the constitution says.” Side note: notice how she did not capitalize "Constitution.")
The congresswoman brushed off threats regarding her citizenship status a few weeks before this joust, having stated, “I have no worry,” the Minnesota lawmaker said in an interview last month. “I don’t know how they’d take away my citizenship and, like, deport me. But I don’t even know, like, why that’s such a scary threat.”
She continued. “I’m not the 8-year-old who escaped war anymore. I’m grown. My kids are grown. Like, I can go live wherever I want.”
The jousting continued this weekend, with Trump suggesting that Omar is in this country illegally, tapping into one of the many conspiracy theories that have emerged surrounding her background. Trump stated, “Somalia, where you have a Congressman goes around telling everybody about our Constitution, yet she supposedly came into our country by marrying her brother.”
He continued, “Well, if that’s true, she shouldn’t be a Congressman, and we should throw her the hell out of our country.”
I can tell you how this will play out. Trump will be immediately called out as racist or Islamophobic, and the media and Democrats will roast him. He will also be mocked for touting a conspiracy theory about Omar's rumored marriage to her brother.
Trump really needs to steer clear of this nonsense right now. When he is not under fire, it’s one thing to engage in this way, but this administration is taking fire from all angles right now, and Trump really needs to stay on point, calm, and push narratives about what he is going to do to make this country more affordable for middle-class America. I really hate to say this, but the GOP is taking on water at the worst possible time, and this type of nonsense is not helping its case.
I don’t like or respect Omar, not a single bit, and I have advocated for her removal from Congress many times myself. Having said that, we simply cannot have the president of the United States spouting off in this way. We are now nearly 11 months into Trump’s second term, and I have to say, while the president started hot, the last few months have been a massive struggle, and the party is taking big hits right now. We need to stop the bleeding and start reversing this narrative before it is too late.
