During the 2025 election cycle, Donald Trump and his allies were spitting venom at Zohran Mamdani.
It was to the point that Trump threatened to hold back federal funding for New York City if Mamdani won its mayoral race.
Well, Mamdani did win, and he came out firing at Trump, but the president has significantly softened his tone since then.
Trump came hard after Mamdani during the campaign season, and as someone who needs federal money to succeed, Mamdani found himself facing presidential threats of funding cuts.
The president posted, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home.”
He continued, “I don’t want to send, as President, good money after bad.”
As conservatives, I would wager that most of, if not all of us, agreed with that statement.
After he won his election, Mamdani came out firing at Trump.
He stated, “So, if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.”
Mamdani continued, “This is not only how we stop Trump, it’s how we stop the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.”
As far as I was concerned, this was a declaration of war, and initially, Trump responded in kind, but now he is completely reversing course.
Reports broke Sunday that Trump and Mamdani were likely to meet to discuss how the president could help the mayor-elect and New York City.
Trump stated, "The mayor of New York, I will say, would like to meet with us, and we'll work something out. But he would like to come to Washington and meet, and we'll work something out. We want to see everything work out well for New York.”
Well, how about no. New Yorkers voted for socialism, not the rest of the country. Give them what they asked for, but don’t use our tax dollars to help facilitate it.
Needless to say, MAGA and conservatives were stunned by this statement from Trump, as we now await answers about what “work something out” means when it comes to Mamdani. If Trump helps him in any way, shape, or form, I would imagine there will be massive backlash in the MAGA world. I don’t want to overreact to the announcement, but it definitely troubles me.
