Sony suspends 'Wheel of Fortune' announcer Jim Thornton, launches investigation after airline incident

Sony Pictures Television Studios has suspended longtime "Wheel of Fortune" announcer Jim Thornton and begun recasting his role after allegations tied to an incident aboard an American Airlines flight in May.

Thornton, who has served as the game show's announcer since 2011, was met by law enforcement at the gate when American Airlines Flight 1276 landed at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14. A fellow passenger had reported concerns about Thornton's behavior during the flight. He was not taken into custody, Fox News Digital reported.

More than three months later, Sony moved to pull him from the show. A spokesperson for Sony Pictures Television Studios confirmed the decision in a statement released alongside the report.

"We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation."

The statement did not describe the nature of the allegations, the scope of the investigation, or whether the suspension is intended as a temporary or permanent measure. Sony did not say when the recasting would be complete or who might fill the role.

Three months between the flight and the suspension raise obvious questions

American Airlines confirmed the May 14 incident in a statement provided to TMZ. The airline said Flight 1276 "was met by law enforcement upon arrival at Los Angeles International Airport following concerns reported by a customer onboard." Fox News Digital reached out to American Airlines for additional comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.

What happened between May and late August remains unclear. Sony's statement says only that it "recently" learned of the allegations, a gap of roughly three and a half months after law enforcement met Thornton at the gate. Neither the studio nor the airline has explained what triggered the delayed action, or whether any law enforcement investigation followed the initial encounter at LAX.

Thornton himself has not issued any public statement addressing the allegations or the suspension.

Thornton held the mic for fifteen years after replacing a show legend

Thornton joined "Wheel of Fortune" in 2011 after the death of Charlie O'Donnell, the show's longtime announcer who died in 2010. Before stepping into one of the most recognizable roles in American television, Thornton had built a career in Los Angeles radio, working at KNX 1070 Newsradio since 1985, a run of more than four decades. His show biography credits him with an Edward R. Murrow award and an Emmy. He also served as the announcer on "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune."

For a figure who spent fifteen years as the voice audiences heard every weeknight, the suspension marks a swift and public removal. Sony's use of the word "recasting", rather than "temporarily replacing", suggests the studio is prepared for Thornton's absence to last well beyond the investigation's conclusion, though the company has not said so directly.

What remains unanswered

The public record on this story is thin. No police report, court filing, or detailed account of the passenger's complaint has surfaced. The specific behavior alleged aboard Flight 1276 has not been disclosed by Sony, American Airlines, or law enforcement. Whether any criminal or civil proceeding is underway, or under consideration, is unknown.

Sony's statement is carefully worded to acknowledge the existence of allegations without characterizing them. That leaves viewers, the production crew, and Thornton's potential replacement operating in a fog of corporate legalese while the investigation plays out behind closed doors.

When a major studio suspends a fifteen-year employee and starts looking for his replacement before telling the public what he is accused of, the least the audience deserves is a straight answer about what happened, and when one might be coming.
