The jousting between Donald Trump and Democrat lawmakers continues.
The latest salvo came when it was reported that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) is the subject of a DOJ probe for possible mortgage fraud.
Investigations such as this now appear to be the weapon of choice for Trump’s DOJ as a way to take down Democrats.
Swalwell, in case you forgot, mounted his own run for president in 2020, but his campaign did not last long.
However, it was clear at the time that he was all about stopping the bad orange man and nothing else. So, when the Jan. 6 unrest happened, Swalwell pounced, including giving rather dramatic testimony on the topic in an effort to disqualify Trump from future office via the 14th Amendment.
Swalwell testified that he directly tied Trump’s Jan. 6 tweets to dangers supposedly faced by members of Congress, testifying, “We connected the president’s tweets to our own safety in the chamber and also the integrity of the proceedings taking place.”
He later talked to the San Francisco Chronicle about his presence at the Capitol that day, stating, “I thought it was one of the safest places, one of the most heavily fortified places in the world. That’s one of the most unsettling things about the day. It is such a sacred, symbolic, and fortified space. I am still in disbelief.”
Democrats are convinced they have Trump dead to rights on his connections to Jeffrey Epstein, and they have been pushing the narrative that the president is covering up those links, and they have been doing so for some time.
They really started to push this idea a few months ago, with Swalwell leading the charge during congressional hearings in which FBI Director Kash Patel was in the hot seat.
Swalwell focused on the Epstein files while questioning Patel, which led to the director responding, "Your fixation on this matter and baseless accusations that I'm hiding child pedophiles is disgusting.”
Patel and Swalwell sounded like two schoolyard children bickering, with Swalwell eventually telling Patel that his "evasiveness" was a "consciousness of guilt."
Things took an ugly turn in this feud after the release of certain Epstein-related materials that portrayed Trump in a potentially concerning light, with Swalwell then posting to X, “If Trump had sex with an underaged girl, should he still be our President?”
There is zero proof that anything like this ever happened, and the victim referenced in the document at issue was Virginia Giuffre, who had stated before her death that she never saw Trump do anything along the lines of what Democrats are trying to imply. Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s partner in crime, has also stated the same.
That post was made on Nov. 12, and on Nov. 13, a report broke that Swalwell is now the subject of a DOJ probe for mortgage fraud. Swalwell responded to the news, "As the most vocal critic of Donald Trump over the last decade and as the only person who still has a surviving lawsuit against him, the only thing I am surprised about is that it took him this long to come after me.”
The announcement was followed by news that Trump has asked the DOJ to open an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s ties to a number of top Democrats, but only to those Democrats. The optics on this are horrible, so I really hope the DOJ comes up with something solid, or this is really going to hurt the GOP in the upcoming election cycle.
