A former DACA recipient and Mexican illegal immigrant stands charged with felonies after allegedly beheading a Marine figure on Quantico’s Iwo Jima monument with a sledgehammer, drawing White House condemnation.

Prince William County police officers arrived about 10:13 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and found Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano, 27, allegedly striking a limestone Iwo Jima monument with a sledgehammer near the entrance to Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia. Fox News reported officers discovered extensive damage to the sculpture that honors the World War II flag-raising on Mount Suribachi.

One Marine figure’s head had been completely removed. Other figures showed gouges, and a bayonet on the statue was damaged. Police estimated repairs would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Maldonado Soriano was arrested on the scene and charged with felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. He is being held without bond. A court date has not been announced.

The New York Post reported the same arrest details and damage estimate, placing the vandalism at the replica statue near the major Marine installation and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

Federal sources detail a long illegal presence and lost DACA status

Federal sources told Fox News that Maldonado Soriano is a Mexican illegal immigrant who first crossed into the United States illegally in December 1999. The Obama administration granted him DACA status in 2014. The Biden administration extended that status in 2024. He lost DACA status in August 2026 after the Trump administration did not renew it.

That timeline puts a man who entered illegally as a child, later received temporary protections under successive Democratic administrations, and then lost protected status under current enforcement policy at the center of an alleged attack on a Marine memorial. Taxpayers now face a six-figure repair bill for a monument that stands near one of the Corps’ most important bases. Cases like this land amid wider fights over jurisdictions that have snubbed ICE detainers on criminal illegal immigrants.

Just The News reported that authorities alleged Maldonado Soriano used the sledgehammer to damage the limestone statue and removed the head of one of the carved soldiers. He remains in custody without bond near the base.

White House condemns the attack and ties it to border enforcement

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers issued a blunt statement after the arrest.

"This criminal illegal alien’s dream is over: Maldonado Soriano disrespected our brave service members and defaced a beautiful monument that honored their sacrifice,"

Rogers continued:

"President Trump has secured our border and is deporting illegal criminals who hate our country and our values. The socialist Democrats want to go back to open borders and flood our communities with dangerous criminal illegal aliens."

The administration framed the case as proof that enforcement removes people who show contempt for American symbols and the men who fought under them. That message tracks with other federal efforts, including a nationwide ICE crackdown aimed at illegal immigrants accused of benefit fraud.

U.S. attorney calls the vandalism a despicable attack on a sacred monument

Federal prosecutors also weighed in. Breitbart reported that U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro condemned the damage in direct terms.

"Vandalizing our World War II Memorial is a despicable attack on a sacred monument honoring the Americans who fought and died for our freedom. We will not tolerate this kind of criminal activism, and we will ensure that anyone who desecrates a veterans’ memorial is held fully accountable."

Pirro’s office underscored that the charges include felony injury to a monument, a statute aimed at protecting memorials from exactly this kind of destruction. Maldonado Soriano is from Stafford, according to the same reporting.

The 9-foot limestone sculpture was created by Felix de Weldon, the artist who later produced the massive bronze Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington. It depicts the 1945 flag-raising on Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Portions of the Quantico installation, including the historic district that contains related features, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The monument sits near the base entrance and the National Museum of the Marine Corps, a place Marines and their families visit to remember the cost of that fight.

No motive has been stated in the available police or federal accounts. No human injuries were reported. The damage is limited to the statue itself, yet the symbolism is plain: a Marine figure’s head was knocked clean off a memorial that stands steps from a working Marine base. Communities that have blocked thousands of ICE detainers on criminal illegal immigrants keep forcing the same question about who is allowed to remain and what conduct follows.

Charges and custody status leave little room for soft treatment

Local police made the arrest. Felony counts followed. Bond was denied. The repair bill will fall on public funds or donors who care about the memorial. Federal sources supplied the immigration history that places Maldonado Soriano outside lawful status at the time of the alleged attack. The White House and the U.S. attorney both treated the case as an accountability test, not a misunderstanding.

Enforcement actions elsewhere have already shown what happens when illegal immigrants with prior records meet active federal priority, including high-profile arrests that have sparked street clashes after officers moved on wanted suspects. The Quantico case now joins that record: a man who entered illegally, held temporary status for years, lost it under current policy, and then faces felony counts for wrecking a Marine monument with a sledgehammer.

Monuments to the dead are not props for late-night rage. When an illegal immigrant with a long record of unlawful presence is accused of smashing one outside a Marine base, the country gets a clean look at what open-border years left behind, and why secure borders and swift deportation of criminal illegal immigrants are not slogans but basic self-respect.
