Things just got a bit stickier for Democrats on the Jeffrey Epstein front.
They were hoping to take down Donald Trump, but it's another Democrat who is facing the brunt of the scandal right now.
Former Clinton Treasury Secretary Larry Summers reportedly flew to Epstein’s private island during his honeymoon, and some believe this is only the tip of the iceberg.
This week, the Harvard Crimson reported that Summers visited the island in 2005 with his wife, Elisa F. New, shortly after they were married in 2005.
This was only a year before Epstein was arrested for the first time, but it was in the midst of an investigation into the billionaire's alleged molestation of a teenage girl at his mansion in Florida.
A spokesperson for Summers responded to the reporting by saying, “Mr. Summers and Ms. New spent their honeymoon in St. John and Jamaica in December 2005, which was long before Mr. Epstein was arrested for the first time.”
According to the report, the couple was accompanied by Ghislaine Maxwell on Epstein’s private plane to the island. That flight took place in December, which was several months after a search warrant had already been executed at Epstein’s mansion regarding the matter mentioned above, so they were clearly aware of the allegations against Epstein when this trip was taken.
ESPN host Stephen A. Smith, who has since ventured into politics on his SiriusXM show, Straight Shooter with Stephen A., believes this is just the beginning of the fallout for Democrats.
Smith stated, “And sure enough, one of the first names that came out was Larry Summers … who’d worked on economic policies for [former President] Barack Obama, who was religiously associated with the left, who was still teaching at Harvard, and then ultimately had to step back and step away from public settings and things of that nature, scale back his role within the last 24 hours because he was one of the names that appeared in the Epstein files.”
He continued, “He was somebody that knew Epstein. He was somebody that kept in constant contact with Epstein. He was somebody that Epstein had influenced and coaxed Epstein into donating millions upon millions of dollars to Harvard University -- I mean, in excess of $9 million.”
Smith added, “This is the kind of stuff that was happening. And you found yourself saying, ‘Oh, damn.’ And ladies and gentlemen, I’m here to tell you that’s exactly what you should be thinking. It should be, ‘Oh, damn.’ Because that’s just the first shoe to drop.”
I was surprised to see that Summers planned to continue teaching at Harvard when he initially announced that he was stepping away from other public commitments after the first reports emerged.
After the latest Harvard Crimson revelations, however, he decided to step away from teaching as well.
His spokesperson stated, “His co-teachers will complete the remaining three class sessions of the courses he has been teaching with them this semester.”
I agree with Smith. I firmly believe that the main reason Trump wanted these files kept hidden was because he knew there would be massive fallout, and some notable figures would be taken down. I don’t know, however, why he would want to protect them, or rather, think that the country needed protection from this. I have a feeling some big names will be dropped soon, and I think Democrats are going to regret pushing for these records to be made public.
