Democrats cry about Trump voter suppression, but it's just deflection

One of the most famous political maxims in existence is "Accuse your enemy of what you are doing, as you are doing it, to create confusion."

For years, Democrats and the media have accused Donald Trump and Republicans of voter suppression because of the constant push to enforce voter ID laws. They say this even though more than 70% of Americans support voter ID laws in some form.

The real voter suppression, however, is taking place on the left side of the aisle, and Democrats are not even hiding it. And that does not even take into account the thousands of alleged noncitizens the DOJ says it has found on voter rolls. I use the word "alleged" because the DOJ has yet to win any of its voter-roll lawsuits. That aside, this is more about suppression than noncitizens voting.

For instance, only last week, the Justice Department sued California over voter rolls it claims include 20,000 noncitizens. Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) immediately cried foul, claiming that this was nothing more than Trump attempting to "suppress California voters just three weeks before Election Day."

Newsom, if you recall, campaigned for Proposition 50 during the last election. This measure would pause California’s so-called independent redistricting commission so he could redistrict the state to offset Texas gerrymandering. The move aimed to flip five red seats blue to offset expected Texas gains. It was answering a wrong with a wrong, then taking the role as the savior of democracy.

While backing the proposition, Newsom accused Texas of "radical rigging of a midterm election.” See… it’s “rigging” when the right does it, but when the left does it, it is merely “fighting fire with fire.”

Singing About Suppression

So many Democrats have cried about voter suppression by Republicans and this administration, I am shocked they have not yet started a band to record some songs about it.

This has been a complaint of Democrats for some time, but it really started to catch fire when then-President Biden called Georgia’s new election laws “Jim Crow 2.0” on January 11, 2022.

He claimed the new law "is about two insidious things: voter suppression and election subversion." Then he used his infamous line that is a dead giveaway when you know he is trying to spin a yarn, stating, "It's not hyperbole, this is a fact."

This became an immediate talking point for Democrats, and that exact “Jim Crow 2.0” phrase was echoed time and again in the media.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) fell in line like an obedient dog, bashing the SAVE America Act, a piece of legislation backed by President Trump to enforce nationwide voter laws. Schumer stated:

"The SAVE Act is not about election integrity. It is voter suppression, plain and simple."

Two weeks later, Trump issued an executive order on mail voting, at which point Schumer, Jeffries, and the party’s campaign committees sued, charging that:

"Donald Trump is desperately trying to rig our elections by making it harder to vote."

More recently, Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) claimed that Trump was an authoritarian at risk of losing, and that he would "find a way for federal law enforcement or the military to seize ballots or machines."

During an event in Chicago on October 13, she openly advocated for putting the fear of God into young professionals coming out of school who pursue a role in a Republican administration. She stated:

"I want young people coming out of school to say, should I go work for the Trump administration? Like, that sounds fun, I might get an opportunity. I want them to be like, Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want, and so let me avoid participating in that, I want that deterrence message."

It’s fearmongering, plain and simple. Terrify the American people that Trump will refuse to leave the White House and rig every election like a dictator. Making the next generation of conservatives hesitant to take a job in a Republican administration for fear of being prosecuted. That is their plan to seize power. But it gets much worse than that, which I will get into in just a minute.

Reality Strikes

Let’s start with Georgia, where Biden claimed it was Jim Crow 2.0 and gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams claimed voter suppression even after the state had a record turnout for early voters.

By November 1, 2022, more than 1.8 million voters had already cast a ballot, with black voters’ share of early ballots also rising from 31.0% to 35.5%. With her narrative debunked, she switched gears, claiming "suppression is about barriers." According to Abrams, actual numbers meant nothing. But I am a bit confused: if overall numbers were up by 500,000 votes, and black voters had increased, what barriers were in place?

Slotkin’s warning of the administration seizing ballots also fell flat. When she asked the Pentagon about its plans for the election, it responded to her in writing that the DoD "has no plan to deploy active-duty troops or Federalized National Guard to polling sites" and no plan "to interfere with ballots, voting machines, or other election-related materials."

FactCheck.org debunked Schumer’s claims about the SAVE Act, noting that the 21 million number Democrats were throwing around was actually Americans who could not quickly find their citizenship documents, not voters who would be blocked from the ballot. But even that is a stretch, as I did this research myself in a previous report (click here to read) and found that it took me less than 15 minutes to find birth certificate information in any state. I also addressed the mail-in ballot misinformation by Democrats in one of my original deep dives (click here to read the report).

I would also note that when Trump has stepped out of line, the system itself has checked him. For instance, the Supreme Court left in place a lower court’s block on the USPS mail-in rule, saying the administration was not likely to succeed on the merits. There is also a case in the works over the 20,000 names that the DOJ wanted from California.

Nobody is being locked out. Ballots are not being seized. Yet Democrats continue to push this fear campaign in an effort to regain power, and the media is going all-in with them.

Democrats Are Playing the Game

What happens when Democrats fear losing? Well, they do everything they are complaining that Trump is doing, and take it a step further.

Virginia Democrats wanted to redraw district lines to add an additional four seats to Democrats, giving them 10 of the 11 districts in the state. The measure barely passed as an election referendum, but the state’s Supreme Court blocked the new maps with a vote of 4-3 against.

A Democrat-drawn map for Maryland in 2022 was tossed out when a judge ruled it as a "product of extreme partisan gerrymandering," finding that "the voice of Republican voters was diluted."

Democrat operative Marc Elias filed a suit in North Carolina to block new state guidelines that required the verification of signatures on mail-in ballots, as well as rejecting ballots that were received with unsealed inner envelopes. His firm's suit called these security measures a "state-sanctioned free-for-all" that risks "arbitrary disenfranchisement."

Imagine that… Verifying a signature to ensure the person whose name is on the ballot is, in fact, the person who filled it out is now disenfranchisement.

Kamala Harris, during a recent interview, is pushing to pack the Supreme Court so Democrats can win every case that goes before it. She also wants to change the Electoral College, which is what you push for when the Constitution keeps getting in your way.

Who What They Called Suppression The Record
President Joe Biden Georgia's election law is "Jim Crow 2.0" and "It's not hyperbole, this is a fact" (Jan. 11, 2022) More than 1.8 million Georgians voted early by Nov. 1, 2022, versus 1.3 million at the same point in 2018
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) The SAVE Act "would disenfranchise tens of millions of people" (March 2026) FactCheck.org: the evidence does not support "tens of millions"; the 21 million figure counts people who cannot quickly find documents, not blocked voters
Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) An authoritarian will use "federal law enforcement or the military to seize ballots or machines" (Sept. 30, 2026) The Pentagon told her in writing it "has no plan to deploy active-duty troops or Federalized National Guard to polling sites"
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) Texas's map is "radical rigging of a midterm election" (Aug. 2025) Prop 50 set aside California's independent redistricting commission until after the 2030 Census, putting five Republican-held seats in play
Virginia Democrats Called the lawsuit against their amendment "court-shopping, plain and simple" (House Speaker Don Scott, Jan. 2026) Pushed a mid-decade map designed to favor Democrats in 10 of 11 districts; struck down 4-3 by the Supreme Court of Virginia
Elias Law Group (NC plaintiffs) Mail ballot rules risk "arbitrary disenfranchisement" (Sept. 2026) Sued to block signature verification guidelines and a rule rejecting ballots with unsealed envelopes, weeks before the midterms
Kamala Harris Is Trump a fascist? "Yes, I do." (CNN town hall, Oct. 23, 2024) "I believe that we need to expand the Supreme Court," plus "changing the Electoral College" (Oct. 13, 2026)
The courts Held the line in both directions: blocked Trump's Postal Service mail ballot rule (Sept. 2026), threw out Maryland's Democrat map as an "extreme partisan gerrymander" (2022) and struck down Virginia's (2026).

The Tell

If Democrats were poker players, I would have all their chips in a few hours because the tell is plain as day over the last decade.

When they accuse the other side of something, they are most assuredly doing it themselves.

Whine about gerrymandering while running ballot measures to tear down the guardrails against it. Accuse Republicans of voter suppression while openly saying you want people to fear prosecution for daring to enter the political workforce as a Republican. Cry fascist while your party employs fascist strategies to regain control of Congress.

Democrats are not trying to protect the system; far from it. They want to take possession of it, fundamentally change it, then put their talons around it so they can never lose control again.
