Now that the continuing resolution (CR) has been passed and the government has reopened, Democrats are trying to figure out a way to turn the situation to their favor.
Several Democrats who voted to block the final CR, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), are now taking victory laps for funding the government.
They are acting as though resources contained in the bill that will go to their districts were all their doing.
After more than a month of posturing to keep the government shut down, eight Democrats crossed the aisle and went against Schumer to fund the government.
Schumer stood fast and refused to vote to support the CR even though he knew there was enough Democrat support for it to pass.
After the bill passed, with Democrats really not getting much in return, Schumer’s future as the Democrat Senate leader started to come into question.
At some point, you just knew that he and other Democrats who voted “no” would figure out a way to try to paint a different picture, and that time is now.
With the funding bill's passage now in the rearview mirror, it would appear that Schumer is hoping to erase the reality that he did not support it when the time came.
That being the case, he should not be able to take credit for anything in that bill that is earmarked for New York, but that is exactly what he is doing.
On the Senate floor this week, Schumer stated, “I will always fight to bring home federal dollars to give New York communities throughout the Southern Tier and Catskills the support they deserve.”
He was speaking of money in the CR that will benefit the fire department and health care facilities in upstate New York.
Rep. Josh Riely (D-NY) was among the 206 Democrats in the House who rejected the spending bill, but he, too, is making himself out to be the hero.
He recently issued a press release that stated, “In Upstate New York, our first responders and health care workers show up for their neighbors every single day. This funding is about showing up for them.”
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) also took a bow and was lauded together with Schumer and Riley in numerous New York-based outlets. For instance, FingerLakes1.com reported, “Three rural communities across Upstate New York are getting a major upgrade thanks to more than $2.6 million in new federal funding secured by Congressman Josh Riley, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.”
That, my friends, is dishonesty on all fronts. Were it not for those eight Democrat senators who crossed the aisle and Republicans, Upstate New York would not have its funding. Schumer, Riley, and Gillibrand literally had nothing to do with it, but even news outlets in the Empire State are giving them credit. It’s despicable of them to lie, and it is also despicable that so-called mainstream outlets are buying into the dishonesty and amplifying it.
