When Donald Trump announced that he was going to add a ballroom to the White House, Democrats just about lost their minds.
Initially, it was intended as an addition to the East Wing, but Trump later decided to tear down the existing East Wing to build the ballroom, citing unexpected design challenges. According to Trump, connecting the ballroom to the East Wing would have been unsightly, so he decided to demolish the existing structure and replace the entire East Wing with the new ballroom instead.
Now, Democrats are trying to put limits on how much money can be donated to the ballroom project by an individual or company, claiming that Trump has effectively put the White House up for sale.
Over the years, there have been about a dozen renovations to the White House, most of them privately funded.
For some reason, a grand ballroom was never part of them, but that is what Trump decided to add.
We have seen tennis courts, swimming pools, and even an Obama basketball court added to the White House, and nary a peep has ever been said about them. But since it is Trump now doing the renovation, everyone is in an uproar.
Trump’s remodel will cost about $300 million, and the president has reportedly secured private funding, including his money, but Democrats are crying that something untoward is happening here.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) has been among the loudest Democrats crying about the addition.
She stated, “Government officials and corporate executives should read the law: the statute of limitations is five years for federal bribery charges.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt fired back, “The same critics who are wrongly claiming there are conflicts of interest would complain if taxpayers were footing the bill.”
Honestly, if Trump were going to take bribes, why would he do it over a ballroom project and not a foundation or cause where he could tap into the money? This, to me, is Democrats complaining for the sake of complaining simply because it is Trump.
Democrats are now leading an effort to limit donations for the ballroom project. But rest assured, if Obama or Biden had proposed such a project when they were in office, Dems would be celebrating.
Warren, of course, is among the group of Democrats proposing the contribution limit, stating, "Billionaires and giant corporations with business in front of this administration are lining up to dump millions into Trump’s new ballroom -- and Trump is showing them where to sign on the dotted line."
She continued, "Americans shouldn’t have to wonder whether President Trump is building a ballroom to facilitate a pay-to-play scheme for political favors. My new bill will put an end to what looks like bribery in plain sight."
This is TDS on steroids, in my opinion. What is even crazier is that Democrats are already talking about demolishing the ballroom if they win back the White House in 2028. Ironically, the new structure is not likely to be finished until the end of Trump’s term, so it will future presidents who will benefit from it, not the current one. I just don't get the outrage over something that is clearly needed at the White House.
