Today’s thought was regarding the abuse of presidential powers, as every Oval Office occupant in modern history has issued some rather controversial pardons. I have long called for the pardon power to be revoked, but I wanted to hear what our readers thought. Today’s comment is from Arthur C. of Idaho, who responded:

“George Mason was prophetic, but he was worried about a President covering up his own crimes. What we are seeing today is the pardon power being used as a necessary shield against a weaponized Department of Justice."

“When the legal system is used to hunt down political opponents, the pardon becomes the only tool left to restore justice. The abuse isn't the pardon; the abuse is the prosecution that made the pardon necessary in the first place.”

While I respect Arthur’s opinion, I do not agree with it. Was George Santos the subject of a bogus prosecution? What about that of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich? How about the thousands pardoned by Joe Biden? What about Chelsea Manning and Oscar López Rivera? These are but a few, and I would say that the bad often far outweigh any good done by presidential pardons.
