Things in California just got a lot stickier in terms of the GOP's chances of stealing the governor’s mansion.
Frontrunner Katie Porter's bid all but collapsed, putting Republican Sheriff Chad Bianco in the overall lead.
It would appear that Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who just designated himself as the “protector and fighter” of California, has now entered the race.
Porter, a former congresswoman, has always been known as a bit of a hothead, but it was just all gossip up until recently.
Then, during an interview with a reporter in California, she got visibly upset when she was asked about how she would attempt to win over Trump voters in the state.
Porter threatened to leave right there and then, but she eventually sat back down and finished the interview. However, she really never did answer that particular question.
Then another video popped up of her going off on a staff member for walking into her camera shot when she was shooting a video. The staffer actually attempted to save Porter from putting out erroneous information, but she just kept yelling anyway.
Up to that point, Porter was not only the top Democrat in the gubernatorial stakes, but she was first overall in the open primary.
Now, she is trailing Bianco. In terms of the general election, that does not mean she would necessarily lose to him, but the numbers showed that he was going to give her a run for her money.
However, there was a large percentage of undecided voters revealed by recent polls, as many in California were clearly not happy with who was running on the Democrats' side of the ledger.
I firmly believe that the DNC started courting potential alternatives to jump into this race in order to lock down another win.
Swalwell is well-liked in California because he follows the Gavin Newsom model. He cries about Donald Trump all day, every day, and pretends he is out there fighting against him all the time.
Mind you, he got crushed when he ran for president, he was targeted by a Chinese spy, and I have lost count of how many times he has been called out for his questionable campaign spending habits.
But Swalwell just announced that he is running for governor. He stated that he sees the governor as having two jobs. “One, keep Trump out of our homes, streets and lives,” then stated that the second issue was to “write the story of a new California on lower prices, on business growth and modernizing the state.”
With a real alternative to Porter now in the running, I would be willing to bet that come January, Swalwell will be leading in the polls. I think he will pull away from Porter and snag a decent proportion of the undecided vote. As sad as it is to say, I think he just locked down the governor’s mansion for Democrat Party.
