Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election on two key issues.
The first of these was immigration, a realm in which Joe Biden completely collapsed. Trump has done an amazing job on this front.
The second was the economy, and Trump has not been able to deliver on promises he made, and even Republicans are now starting to waver on his performance on this front.
In August 2024, Trump stated, "When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on day one."
During the campaign, I warned against making aggressive “day one” promises because voters take them literally, and from that perspective, Trump has not delivered on his pledges.
While the price of eggs has dropped, it has been a slow decline, but the cost of most other household staples is up, including produce, meat, and bread.
Trump did not help the situation with his tariff wars, which are now leaking into the consumer market, quite possibly at the worst time, with the Christmas season only right around the corner.
Trump has continuously put out the message that the economy is thriving, and his tariffs are indeed working.
For instance, during a recent McDonald’s summit meeting, Trump told the crowd, "This is also the golden age of America because we are doing better than we've ever done as a country. Prices are coming down and all of that stuff."
But prices are not coming down. This is not a shot at Trump; it is just reality. And I say this from personal experience, as I am still spending more than double on groceries than I did in 2020.
And no, not all of this is Trump’s fault, nor is it all due to tariffs, because Biden’s economy truly wrecked this country. But Trump said he would lower prices on day one, and we are now 10 months into his presidency, and we are still getting gouged. And I have not even gotten into housing and healthcare costs, which are a complete and utter debacle right now.
Fox News just released a poll on the economy, and it was not good news for Trump, as even his most diehard supporters are growing frustrated with the state of their bank accounts.
The survey found: “Some 76% of voters view the economy negatively. That’s worse than the 67% who felt that way in July and the 70% who said the same at the end of former President Biden’s term.”
The survey also found: “Voters blame the president. About twice as many say President Donald Trump, rather than Biden, is responsible for the current economy. And three times as many say Trump’s economic policies have hurt them (they said the same about Biden’s last year). Plus, approval of how Trump is handling the economy hit a new low, and disapproval of his overall job performance hit record highs among core supporters.”
Trump and his administration have to figure this out immediately. This is why I raised the red flag after the November election losses. It was not the losses themselves that shocked me, but rather how we lost, and how the GOP reacted to the defeats as if they were nothing to worry about. If Republicans don’t change their plan of action, we are going to get creamed. Trump is losing support, and there is no sugarcoating it. And now he sounds like Biden when he tells everyone that prices are falling when we can see in our bank accounts that they are not. All he needs to do is be truthful, then give us the plan and the timeline. I think Americans will accept that, but they will surely not accept the same nonsense that was fed to us by the last administration. Just because you say it does not make it true, no matter how loud and how often you do it.
