Earlier this month, former Vice President Dick Cheney passed away at the age of 84.
Cheney served in George W. Bush’s administration, and he has long been one of the most polarizing figures among conservatives.
Not surprisingly, Cheney family foe Donald Trump was not invited to the funeral services.
Upon his death on Nov. 3, Cheney’s family announced, “For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.”
The statement went on, “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing.”
It concluded, “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
Cheney was the father of former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-MT), who had a well-publicized feud with Trump, one in which her father joined, regularly going on the attack.
Former President Bush paid tribute to his former VP after his death.
Bush stated, “Dick was a calm and steady presence in the White House amid great national challenges. I counted on him for his honest, forthright counsel, and he never failed to give his best.”
He continued, “He held to his convictions and prioritized the freedom and security of the American people.”
I do not share that sentiment because it was Dick Cheney who, I believe, purposely misrepresented intelligence to launch a war after 9/11 in an effort to keep Bush in office. I will never forgive him for that.
Typically, when a former official of this stature passes away, a representative of the current administration would be invited to the funeral, but that was not the case this time around, as neither Trump nor Vice President JD Vance was invited to attend the services.
While Trump was not there, the event was an A-list production that included Bush, former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as all other living vice presidents.
Trump has not commented publicly on the death of Cheney, and he did not make a statement about the funeral snub.
Quite frankly, I don’t think Trump cares. And I refuse to sugarcoat what Cheney did to this nation, as the level of hypocrisy being spewed by people, including many on the left, characterizing the man as a hero when they openly demonized him for years over the false information on weapons of mass destruction used to start a war. Cheney is no hero, and I will not pretend that he is.
