California Gov. Gavin Newsom is clearly looking to position himself for a run in the 2028 presidential election.
He is out there telling people how wonderful he is now, but in reality, the man is a snake in the grass.
Newsom has been tied to several corruption and waste scandals, and now one of his former staffers is in cuffs, having been arrested after a political corruption scandal was concluded.
If you cannot run a state, you surely cannot run the country, and that is something Newsom has proven he is incapable of doing time and again.
Newsom got rocked during the COVID-19 pandemic for breaking his own rules, but that was far from the worst of it. A corruption/fraud scandal broke around the same time, but it was barely covered in the media.
The state had paid out hundreds of millions of dollars in unemployment benefits to state and local prisoners. Sacramento County Dist. Atty. Anne Marie Schubert, the leader of the task force at issue, stated, “As we unravel this onion, it’s likely to be the biggest fraud in California history.”
Republican San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer responded to the report, “I’m very seriously thinking about running because California needs new leadership and one-party rule has not served the state well in the last few years.”
Corruption is often a family business in politics, and that would appear to be the case with the governor as well as his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
Mrs. Newsom is involved in several companies that have former gubernatorial staffers and aides up and down their employee rosters. These companies also happen to be making money hand over fist from lobbyists who have been working her husband on behalf of their respective causes.
Caitlin Sutherland, executive director of Americans for Public Trust, stated, “It is no surprise Gavin and Jennifer Newsom have leveraged their business and non-profit endeavors for personal and political gain.”
Corruption begets corruption, so it was no surprise at all to read a report today that the governor's former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, was just indicted by a grand jury for, among other charges, bank and wire fraud.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant stated, “This is a crucial step in an ongoing political corruption investigation that began more than three years ago.”
His statement continued, “As it always has, the U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly with our law enforcement partners to protect the people of California from political corruption.”
Sid Patel, who serves as the Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Sacramento Field Office, added, “Today’s charges are the result of three years of relentless investigative work, in partnership with IRS Criminal Investigation and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The FBI will remain vigilant in its efforts to uncover fraud and corruption, ensuring our government systems are held to the highest standards.”
This reminds me of all the staffers from New York City Mayor Eric Adams who were indicted, and he denied ever doing anything wrong, that is, until he, too, was indicted for taking bribes (Trump later told the DOJ to drop the charges against him, likely in exchange for help with immigration). You cannot trust these people. Yet, Newsom has become the darling of the mainstream media as they build him up to take on JD Vance in the 2028 race.
