Today’s “thought” was about the government offering a hand up instead of a handout, and about the disturbing reality of how many Americans rely on government programs to pay their bills and put food on the table. Our comment today comes from Allen S. out of Oregon, who responded:
“Teddy Roosevelt was exactly right. ‘Pulling your own weight’ isn't a punishment; it's the foundation of self-respect. Our current system has become a trap that pays people to stay dependent."
“A work or training requirement for able-bodied adults isn't cruel; it's the very ‘hand up’ you’re talking about. It provides the skills and, more importantly, the dignity that a handout can never offer.”
Allen, I agree and have always advocated for some type of training or work program to be part of many of our entitlement programs. I just don’t think it is too much to ask if you are going to be collecting taxpayer money.
