A juvenile and an adult bystander were shot Saturday evening inside a Humble, Texas, mall after reports of an active shooter sent multiple law enforcement agencies rushing to the scene, and one person is now in custody.

Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 4 deputies and Humble Police Department officers responded to Deerbrook Mall just after 6:30 p.m. Saturday after calls came in reporting an active shooter at the shopping center on the 20100 block of U.S. Highway 59, a major commercial corridor northeast of Houston. Three officers were already stationed inside the mall when the shooting broke out, allowing police to respond within moments, Humble Police Chief Chris Battenfield said at a Saturday evening news conference.

One juvenile was shot and transported to a hospital. The young victim's condition was not immediately known. An adult bystander also suffered a gunshot wound to a finger, an injury Battenfield described as non-life-threatening. One person was detained at the scene.

Authorities declared the mall secured and said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Police said they are not searching for additional suspects.

Officers already on site cut response time

Battenfield emphasized that three officers had been stationed at Deerbrook Mall before the shooting started. That pre-positioned presence meant law enforcement did not have to wait for a dispatch-and-drive cycle before engaging the situation, a detail that likely shortened the window of danger for shoppers and store employees inside the building on a Saturday evening.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office also sent deputies to assist partner agencies in locking down the scene. The sheriff's office urged the public to stay away from the area.

In a statement, the sheriff's office said:

"Please avoid the area and follow the directions of law enforcement personnel. Our deputies are working alongside our law enforcement partners to help secure the scene and protect the public."

The Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 4, which was among the first agencies on scene, released its own statement confirming the initial details as Fox News Digital reported:

"At this time, one victim has been reported shot, and one person has been detained. Law enforcement officers remain on scene as the investigation continues."

That initial statement referenced only one victim. Battenfield's later news conference raised the confirmed count to two people shot.

Key questions remain unanswered

Authorities have not publicly identified the detained individual, and no charges had been announced as of Saturday evening. Police have not disclosed the type of weapon used or offered any motive for the shooting. The juvenile victim's age and identity have not been released, nor has the identity of the adult bystander.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris County Sheriff's Office for additional details. The story remained developing at the time of publication.

Whether additional people were injured during the evacuation, a common concern in chaotic mall-shooting responses, has not been addressed by any of the three agencies involved.

When gunfire breaks out in a crowded shopping mall on a Saturday evening, the margin between a contained incident and a mass-casualty event often comes down to whether officers are already there. In Humble, three of them were, and that mattered.
