Eric Holder, who served as former President Barack Obama’s attorney general, can be a bit of an enigma when it comes to his positions.
He fights against gerrymandering, yet he created an organization to help blue states do just that. He cries about Donald Trump legally nominating three Supreme Court justices during his last administration, yet he now wants to pack the court with liberal jurists to ensure that Democrats win every case.
Trump is now using Holder’s comments to encourage Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to eliminate the filibuster rules so Republicans can ram through legislation over the course of the next year.
Democrats have a funny way of using the word “reform.” When they use it, it really means breaking the rules in a way that helps Democrats.
For instance, Holder recently stated, “I think, you know -- the reality is, it pains me to say this -- I think the Supreme Court is a broken institution, and it’s something that has to be, I think, a part of the national conversation in ‘26 and in ‘28, ‘What are we going to do about the Supreme Court?’”
He continued, “And I think that we have to think about, again, talking about the acquisition and the use of power, if there is a Democratic trifecta in 2028 -- and I think the possibility of that is pretty good -- Supreme Court reform is something that has to be considered.”
His idea of reform? Expand the court to ensure that Democrats have a liberal-dominated court so they can win every case that goes before the Supreme Court moving forward. That is not reform… that is rigging the system.
Trump has been trying to pressure Republicans to nix the filibuster so they can push through any legislation they want, damn the future consequences.
During a recent meeting, Trump stated, “It’s time for Republicans to do what they have to do. If you don’t terminate the filibuster you’ll be in bad shape.”
The problem, however, is that many GOP senators do not back such a move for fear of what will happen once Democrats retake Congress.
Thune stated, “I’ve said before there are not the votes there.” He then added that Trump “could have some sway with members, but I just know where the math is on this issue in the Senate.”
On Monday, Trump posted a clip of Holder discussing the Supreme Court, with the caption, “Obama sycophant, the former Attorney General of the United States, who did so much to hurt our Country, and who weaponized the Obama Administration against the Republican Party (and ME!), Eric Holder (known as ‘FAST AND FURIOUS’) just gave a Speech where he emphatically stated, above all else, that Democrats will PACK the Supreme Court of the United States if they get the chance.”
His post continued, “The word is, he wants 21 Radical Left Activist Judges, not being satisfied with the heretofore 15 that they were seeking. It will be 21, they will destroy our Constitution, and there’s not a thing that the Republicans can do about it unless we TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, which will lead to an easy WIN of the Midterms, and an even easier WIN in the Presidential Election of 2028. Why would the Republicans even think about giving them this opportunity?”
He concluded, “The American People don’t want gridlock, they want their Leaders to GET THINGS DONE — TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, AND HAVE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FOUR YEARS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY, BY FAR, WITH NOT EVEN THE HINT OF A SHUTDOWN OF OUR GREAT NATION ON JANUARY 30TH!”
As much as Trump wants this to happen, I don’t think it ever will. Republicans do not want to provide any vehicle that would allow Democrats to run roughshod over them in the future, and ending the filibuster would do that. If Democrats want to do that, the consensus is that the GOP will force them to be the ones to break the filibuster.
This, to me, is a double-edged sword. If the GOP breaks the filibuster and Dems take the trifecta in 2028, we may never see another Republican Congress or presidency. However, if the GOP does not break the filibuster, they are unlikely to get any meaningful legislation passed over the next year, and Trump will likely spend his last two years as a lame duck, powerless to get anything passed in Congress. This, my friends, is what we call a “hot mess” down here in Texas.
