Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has found himself in the same situation as Iran… Donald Trump has taken the fight to Massie’s home turf.
Massie has been fighting Trump for virtually this entire term, and while Trump has threatened to primary him and called him every name in the Trump venom handbook, Trump has yet to truly go for the kill shot.
That all ends this week, as Trump is heading to Kentucky specifically to target Massie and boost his primary opponent, Ed Gallrein, who is loyal to Trump.
There is nothing wrong with pushing back as a member of the president's party, as long as it is because your constituents want it. The first obligation of any elected official is to the people who put him or her in office.
While these people may support most of the president’s agenda, there could be some issues they do not support, and it is that official’s job to back them up. Constituents before party, before president, and certainly before personal agenda.
Massie started that way, but then things got personal. Be it the Trump jabs or just the need for national attention, Massie has been swimming against the tide since the big, beautiful bill, and he has not stopped.
I was among those not overly thrilled with the BBB, so I understood when Massie, according to ABC, stated, "Although there were some conservative wins in the budget reconciliation bill (OBBBA), I voted No on final passage because it will significantly increase U.S. budget deficits in the near term, negatively impacting all Americans through sustained inflation and high interest rates.”
My main issue with the BBB was the national debt, which has continued to spiral out of control, but when Massie challenged Trump on updating the War Powers Resolution with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), it just felt wrong.
The press release was all Democrat talking points, hammering home the idea that only Congress has the authority to declare war.
That is correct, but the president has the authority to order military operations to protect this nation, as long as they do not go on for more than 60 days without congressional approval. Massie wanted to take that away from Trump.
Their entire press release cherry-picked clauses of the War Powers Resolution to suit their narrative, but they were only half-informing We the People. This is when it was clear that Massie simply opposed all things Trump for the sake of being a thorn in the side of Trump.
Trump will be in Kentucky on Wednesday, and he will be unleashing his venom as though his words are Operation Epic Fury and Massie is Iran.
The White House addressed the upcoming trip, with the New York Post reporting that a White House official stated, “You can have differences, but you have to be constructive. He is not constructive. In fact, he’s the Democrats’ favorite member.”
Massie is not my representative, and he is not even in my state, so normally, I would stay out of this fight. However, it does appear that Massie has lost his way and is going after clicks, likes, shares, and raising his profile, possibly for a run for higher office at some point.
The moment you call Operation Epic Fury illegal, when Trump’s powers are very clear in this case, you have lost me. Disagreeing with the operation is one thing, but pushing a false narrative, worse, one that is a Democrat talking point, well, I think the time has come for you to go. But ultimately, this is up to the fine people of Kentucky to decide, and I will respect their decision in the matter regardless of my personal feelings.
