California Governor Gavin Newsom is clearly making a play for the 2028 Democrat nomination, firing shots at Trump every chance he gets.
Typically, politicians will keep their vitriol limited to domestic appearances, but this is now the second time that Newsom has traveled abroad and trashed Trump in the process.
Newsom’s energy deal at the Munich Security Conference was the last straw, however, and Trump let loose.
I have never liked politicians trashing the country or the sitting president on foreign soil, and that rule has more or less been abided by, that is, until Trump won the presidency in 2016.
Newsom broke it a few weeks ago at an overseas event, and he just did it again, stating, “I am so infuriated with what Donald Trump has done.”
He continued, “Never in the history of the United States of America has there been a more destructive president than the current occupant in the White House.”
Newsom is trying to paint himself as the righteous one who can save everyone from the bad orange man. Based on recent polling, I am not so sure it is very effective.
While Trump has ripped into clean energy, Newsom decided to sign a deal with the UK, creating a collaboration that dedicates $1 billion to projects in California using UK clean tech.
The deal was shattered online, with California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton leading the charge, stating, “What a genius idea that is, the UK with the highest electricity prices pretty much in the world teaming up with California the highest electricity prices anywhere in America apart from Hawaii to do more of the insanity of offshore wind that is planned already to destroy our beautiful coastline in California.”
Then he hit Newsom on a point I regularly make about these back-slapping conferences, adding, “We are so sick of Newsom endlessly flying around the world lecturing everyone about climate change while spewing out carbon emissions, all while his insane climate policies give us the highest gas prices in America and the highest electric bills after Hawaii.”
This is all about Newsom making a splash and creating relationships with foreign leaders who he hopes will endorse him over JD Vance or whoever else may win the GOP nomination in 2028, nothing more.
Between AOC’s word salads, bad history and geography, and Newsom’s deal, Trump could not hold his tongue any longer.
He responded, “I watched AOC answering questions in Munich – this was not a good look for the United States.”
He continued, “I watched Gavin Newscum answering questions in Munich, and this was a bad look for our country.” He added, “These two people are incompetent.”
Again, I love the pushback, but leave the stupid nicknames out of it. Trump could have come back with hard-hitting talking points about California’s rising gasoline prices because Newsom is importing oil from the Bahamas, but he lost that opportunity to call him “Newscum.” The opportunities are there for Trump, but he just has to learn how to dial down the insults and land some hard shots when the situation presents itself.
