For years, Donald Trump has been blasting countries like India that continue to buy oil from Russia.
Trump’s beef is real: they are funding the very war we all want to see end, which is the Russia-Ukraine war.
Trump appears to have finally gotten India to cave, and when you consider how much money India spends with Russia on oil, this could bring Putin to his knees.
When Trump appeared at the United Nations General Assembly, he tore into NATO countries for "funding the war against themselves." He then asked, "Who the hell ever heard of that one?"
Trump continued, "China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil.”
He then added, "But inexcusably, even NATO countries have not cut off much Russian energy and Russian energy products, which, as you know, I found out about two weeks ago, and I wasn't happy."
The one way Trump could make everyone pay is by hammering Russia with sanctions and tariffs, but he really needed to cut the money train, and he just did.
This week, Trump announced that India has finally agreed to stop buying oil from Russia.
After he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump posted, “We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the United States and, potentially, Venezuela.”
Trump continued, “This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!”
I cannot stress enough how monumental this is, if, in fact, India has cut ties with Russia for oil.
Just how big a deal is this? Well, India is currently importing nearly 1.8 million barrels of oil per day from Russia, which is more than 35% of all Indian oil supplies.
This past November, India purchased nearly $4 billion in oil from Russia. And since the war with Ukraine started, India has imported about $170 billion in oil from Russia.
Now, think about the financial shape Russia would be in right now without that money. So, as Trump stated, countries like India, as well as our NATO allies, are paying Russia’s war bills right now.
Trump has made some big deals over the last year, but this could be the monumental deal of his presidency. Russia was already struggling with munitions, needing countries like China and North Korea to step in. But you take this money away, and as Trump stated, it should be game over.
