Trump goes after Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman on tariffs

Paul Krugman, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, has been at war with President Donald Trump and his quest to create national income via tariffs for years.

If we go back to the 2016 election, Krugman was making derogatory remarks about Trump on X after he announced one of his first manufacturing deals before taking office for his first term.

Krugman has continued his attack, and now Trump is firing back.

Krugman hits Trump right out of the gate

There is no one deal that will bring American manufacturing back, but Trump’s goal heading into his first term was to create an environment that would make it more financially viable for companies to start building in our country again.

Before taking the Oval Office, Trump announced that Carrier was going to keep 1,000 jobs in Indiana rather than shipping them to Mexico. Keep in mind, this happened before Trump ever took office.

Rather than call it an exciting or promising start, Krugman posted, “If Trump did a Carrier-style deal every week for the next 4 years, he could bring back 4% of the manufacturing jobs lost since 2000.”

That would set the tone for the next decade of attacks against Trump leveled by Krugman.

Still at it

Krugman is now posting on Substack, and the hits keep coming. About a week ago, he posted a piece claiming he could have made a better deal with the European Union, so my question would be, why didn’t he?

After all, had he reached out to the Biden administration, I would think Joe and company would have been more than happy to bring him in to work out better trade deals. Instead, he wrote, “Trump has now announced a trade ‘deal’ with the European Union that looks a lot like the ‘deal’ he made with Japan. I use scare quotes because there is little sign of a quid pro quo. The United States is imposing a 15 percent tariff that is lower than previously threatened, but still vastly higher than we had before Trump. Overall U.S. tariffs seem likely to settle roughly at the level that prevailed after the infamous Smoot-Hawley tariff of 1930."

Several days later, he posted again on the topic, writing, “On Tuesday Donald Trump went on CNBC to explain why the European Union is facing a tariff of ‘only’ 15 percent. But what he said was simply delusional -- and the delusion should be even more concerning than the tariffs.”

Krugman also hinted that Trump was clueless as to what the EU agreed to in the deal, which is what likely set the president off.

Trump fires back

Trump did what he does best, namely, hurled personal insults when publicly criticized. Trump responded to the posts from Krugman, stating, “Paul Krugman of the New York Times has been predicting Doom and Gloom ever since my great election success in 2016. In other words, he has been wrong for YEARS, as ALL markets have been hitting new HIGHS, and are now higher than ever before.”

Then came the real hit, with Trump continuing, “People stayed out of the ‘BEST MARKET IN HISTOY’ [sic] because of this Trump Deranged BUM. Sue them!” Seriously, Mr. President, please proofread your posts before hitting send!

This shows the real problem with today’s so-called experts and analysts. They don’t look carefully at situations to evaluate them, but instead only look to criticize Trump (and Republicans) and celebrate Democrats. We don’t have real media in this country any longer, at least not in the mainstream.

We have publications like Fox News and the New York Post that are weighted to the right, and publications like the Washington Post and New York Times that are weighted to the left, generally leaving the American people with a biased slant of the news rather than a true overall picture of what is taking place. That is likely exactly why you are reading my reports rather than those of Sean Hannity or Jake Tapper.
