The California governor’s race just got turned on its ear when Tom Steyer accused Democrat frontrunner Eric Swalwell of not living in California.
According to Steyer, Swalwell rents a room in a home in the eastern Bay Area to claim residency, but he is never there.
Swalwell is pushing back, but this is something that, ironically enough, could lead to two Republicans facing off in the general election.
Earlier this week, Steyer unleashed the bombshell that shook the board in the governor’s election.
Steyer claimed that Swalwell lives in California “on paper only.”
Steyer's attorney has since contacted the Secretary of State to “enforce a dormant residency requirement in the governor’s race.”
The letter, in part, stated, “If elected, questions of legitimacy would hang over Swalwell, allowing the Trump Administration to sow doubt, exploit the ambiguity, and advance its perverse agendas. The Trump Administration could question Swalwell’s legitimacy as Governor and, therefore, imperil California’s receipt of federal funds, the state’s ability to deploy the California National Guard, and act in emergencies.”
The landlord in question, Krstina Mrzywka, has since filed a declaration that Swalwell has lived at her property since 2017.
Swalwell’s campaign added, "Steyer is personally going after a public servant who has long rented in his East Bay Congressional district.
“California's renters don't need to be shamed by an out-of-touch billionaire."
As noted above, Swalwell is the frontrunner in the Democrat Party, now sitting in second place in the open primary. If this scandal hurts him, there is currently a Republican lurking in third place, so Democrats could be knocked out of the general election.
If Swalwell has truly lived there and not just loaded up a room with personal belongings and using the address for mail, it stands to reason that the neighbors would have seen him by now, yet that does not appear to be the case.
One person who lives in the immediate area, Gita Prusty, has lived there for five years and stated, “I’ve never seen him.”
A 19-year-old neighbor who lives only two doors away says that she has “never seen” Swalwell, and she has lived her entire life.
Swalwell, in typical fashion, has now reverted to playing the victim. He posted on X that he receives hundreds of threats every year, and now, thanks to Steyer, everyone knows where he lives, and his family is now at risk. That is a professional deflection. If he truly lives there, it would be easy enough to prove. Pictures of family events and the like should be all over the place, right? So just show them to us, Mr. Swalwell, and this all goes away.
