Former Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder loves to fancy himself as the leveler against the GOP.
After he left office, he started an organization to challenge GOP gerrymandering while backing efforts in which Democrats did just that.
Holder is back again, and he usually brings some big guns with him, but this time, he wants to push for the expansion of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Once Donald Trump secured a 6-3 conservative edge at the high court, you knew Democrats were going to lose their minds.
Even though I believe this is the most balanced court we have had in decades (Trump justices and Chief Justice John Roberts cross the aisle all the time), Democrats stomp their feet every time their side is unhappy with a ruling..
To that point, in December 2021, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) co-sponsored legislation to expand the court.
Warren was literally calling for the hijacking of the court, hoping to expand it with enough seats to swing the majority back over to Democrats. Her statement on the matter concluded, “This extremist court has shown that it is not interested in advancing the equal administration of justice. It’s time to rebalance the Supreme Court to create one that is.”
Joe Biden, for all his faults, never bought into the idea of expanding the court, but he did feed the far left some energy when he created a commission to study its possible expansion.
Prior to the introduction of Warren’s legislation, Biden ordered a 180-day study, establishing what he called a “bipartisan commission.”
The final report was nearly 300 pages, but it was a complete and utter waste of time, as it was more of a historical breakdown of Supreme Court history, including descriptions of past efforts at expansion.
Ultimately, Biden put the idea on the back burner, and much to the chagrin of the far left, he never really took the concept all that seriously.
Trump has had some big wins regarding immigration of late, and that has Democrats up in arms, and now Barack Obama’s wingman, Eric Holder, is going to lead the effort for round two of the court expansion debate.
Holder stated, "I think the Supreme Court has to be reformed, potentially, you know, expanded. We cannot simply allow this court to continue to do that which it has done. They don’t focus on precedent, they focus on personnel. And by that, I mean, you know, they think, 'Alright, we've got six votes and we can now do things that are inconsistent with precedent, long-term precedents that have been put in place,' to the detriment of our democracy, to the detriment of fairness — and that means political fairness as well as economic fairness. And, so I think, yeah, that should be a part of whoever runs for president -- Supreme Court reform.”
Warren is considered an uber-progressive, so we never really took her efforts too seriously. The same can be said about all the far-left groups that were on this bandwagon when Biden was in office, but Holder brings a new game altogether.
Holder is an establishment figure, and he brings a ton of money and influence into this conversation, so his threat needs to be taken very seriously. If you followed what he did regarding legislative gerrymandering, you know he can be effective, so this is something we clearly need to watch. Keep in mind, this is something that Democrats can only change if they have the numbers in Congress and are sitting in the Oval Office, so we need to make sure that does not happen.
