Donald Trump just secured a big win from the Supreme Court, and Democrats are not taking it very well.
Trump had previously sent ICE agents into Los Angeles as part of an enhanced immigration crackdown, officials who have been under unprecedented assault when conducting recent raids.
Though the administration faced hurdles in the lower courts, the U.S. Supreme Court just sided with Trump regarding the manner in which its initiatives are being conducted, and the resulting meltdown is epic.
When Donald Trump said he was going to take serious action in California, Newsom just about had a heart attack.
Assaults against ICE officers had risen to an unprecedented level, so the move by Trump to enlist National Guard and to deploy enhanced enforcement techniques help made sense.
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas took issue with the situation, stating, “We will not allow (Los Angeles) to become a staging ground for political terror.”
Bill Essayli, U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, defended the move, stating, “You have thousands of people forming and gathering in crowds, rioting, attacking our agents, throwing rocks, throwing eggs, throwing Molotov cocktails.”
Newsom has clearly never bet on sports games because he would have learned that you never mess with the gambling gods by touting a win before the fight is completely over.
In this case, Newsom gloated when a lower court ruled in his favor, telling Trump it was unlawful to deploy the Guard, seemingly implying that anything the administration did as part of its crackdown was illegitimate.
At the time, Newsom stated, "Today, the court sided with democracy and the Constitution. No president is a king -- not even Trump -- and no president can trample a state's power to protect its people. As the court today ruled, Trump is breaking the law by 'creating a national police force with the President as its chief.'”
He continued, “That's exactly what we've been warning about for months. There is no rampant lawlessness in California, and in fact, crime rates are higher in Republican-led states."
This week, the Supreme Court ruled along ideological lines that Trump's tactics in enforcing immigration law in L.A. passed muster, including the ways in which agents were determining "reasonable suspiction" for purposes of stops, and Newsom just about had a coronary.
After the ruling, Newsom posted, "@realDonaldTrump's hand-picked SCOTUS majority just became the Grand Marshal for a parade of racial terror in LA. His administration is targeting Latinos -- and anyone who doesn’t look or sound like @StephenM's idea of an American -- to deliberately harm our families and economy.”
Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) added, "This Administration rounded up and arrested California residents, including U.S. citizens and legal residents, based on the color of their skin or the language they speak. This is blatantly illegal, yet the Supreme Court is allowing it to happen while the case proceeds. When the history of this country’s rapid descent into dictatorship is written, Republicans in Congress and the Roberts Court will have been its primary enabler.”
This case is not yet over, but the ruling will allow Trump to continue to use tough tactics to protect agents on the ground until arguments are heard and a final ruling is rendered. You just have to love how Democrats act like petulant children in both victory and defeat. They whine when they lose, and they gloat when they win.
