Former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) has just made another pivot to the right, as it is now being reported that she is joining the right-leaning Washington Reporter.
She will be a contributing columnist for the publication, pushing her further away from the Democrat Party.
Her column should be a nice mix of commentary and inside baseball that political junkies like myself will feast on.
It was December 2022 when Sinema dropped a bombshell on the Democrat Party.
Sinema was already struggling with leadership over her stance to refuse to break the filibuster, as well as pushing back on some of the spending bills being forced through Congress.
Sinema is a liberal, but she did not like the direction of the party, and announced she would be leaving the Democrat Party and was now formally considered an Independent, although she would caucus with the Dems.
At the time, she stated, “I don’t anticipate that anything will change about the Senate structure.” Politico noted that she later added, “I intend to show up to work, do the same work that I always do. I just intend to show up to work as an independent.”
When Biden was in office, Democrats wanted to break the filibuster to push through legislation. Now that Trump wants the GOP to break the filibuster, Democrats are against it.
If you read my reports regularly, you know this hypocrisy drives me up a wall, and it is not sitting well with Sinema, either. Sinema ripped AOC for changing her tune on the filibuster in 2025, with The Hill reporting her response to AOC, “Change of heart on the filibuster, I see.”
While I would never see myself voting for Sinema, she got my respect with one post on X, having written, “Popular take from the Left:If u had eliminated the filibuster & voted for everything that the Left wanted, the threat of the filibuster being used by Rs would never happen bc Ds would win every election & have a permanent majority. What a breathtakingly undemocratic take.”
That sounds exactly like something I would write.
A good journalist, especially an opinion and analysis writer like myself, never limits himself to only reading his own ideology. You cannot get big picture thinking by drowning yourself in an echo chamber.
That is why I am very much looking forward to reading Sinema’s take on the current political scene, as she will likely give a very grounded perspective of the Left and its policies in her columns.
