Senator Tina Smith opposes ICE funding over alleged misconduct

Senator Tina Smith, a Democrat from Minnesota, has taken a firm stand against funding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to what she calls unlawful behavior.

On Friday, during an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” Smith voiced concerns about ICE and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), aligning herself with Senator Chris Murphy on the need for significant reforms, while also addressing a separate issue involving a joint investigation with the FBI and state authorities that she claims the Trump administration is abandoning.

During the interview, Smith didn’t mince words about her reluctance to support ICE funding, according to Breitbart.

“I don’t know how I could vote for a funding bill for ICE when they are behaving and so forth for the Department of Homeland Security, when so much of what they are doing is illegal, is lawless,” Smith said on “The Weeknight.”

While her frustration is clear, one has to wonder if painting an entire agency with such a broad brush is the path to meaningful reform or just a political soundbite.

Concerns Over FBI Investigation Approach

Smith also raised alarms about a joint investigation involving the FBI and state authorities, initially announced as a collaborative effort.

“We started on what seemed to be maybe a good track, where it was announced that the FBI was going to do this investigation jointly with state investigatory authorities. That’s the way we traditionally and typically do it in this state,” Smith explained on “The Weeknight.”

“And then we come to find out that the Trump administration is backing away from that,” she continued, calling the shift a “terrible decision” that could harm the FBI’s credibility.

Calls for Reversal and Reform

Smith didn’t stop at criticism—she took action by contacting the FBI directly to demand a reversal of the decision.

Additionally, her colleague Senator Amy Klobuchar sent a letter to the Attorney General the night before the interview, insisting on a joint investigation as the proper approach.

This tag-team effort shows determination, but it also raises questions about whether such public pressure helps or hinders the delicate balance of federal and state cooperation.

Broader Implications for DHS Oversight

Co-host Alicia Menendez pressed Smith on whether her Senate colleagues shared an interest in placing limits on DHS operations.

While Smith affirmed her own commitment to constraints and highlighted her alliance with Senator Murphy, the broader appetite for such measures among other lawmakers remains unclear.

Here’s the rub: pushing for reforms without a clear consensus risks turning a policy debate into a partisan standoff, especially when immigration enforcement is already a lightning rod issue—let’s hope for solutions over slogans.
