If you know me, you know I have enormous respect for the flag of Texas, the United States flag, and our military flags, such as the POW MIA flag.

I am a flag nut, and while I love the Gadsden flag, I would never dare suggest it equates to any of those mentioned above.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), however, has decided that the “Pride” flag should have that status, and I think it is utterly ridiculous. This has nothing to do with the LGBTQ+ community and everything to do with respecting the flag of our nation and those who have served it.

Rolling back

Trump is kind of an enigma when it comes to the LGBTQ+ community.

Trump has openly gay staffers on his team, and he did during his first term, yet he is leading the charge to defend biological women from having biological men compete in their sports and use their bathrooms and locker rooms.

I don’t think Trump is inherently homophobic, but being a part of that community does not give one carte blanche, as Democrats seem to think.

The other knock against Trump on this front is that he always seems to hit his rollbacks hardest during Pride Month, which is always taken as a slight by this community.

Remove it

Like me, flags are a big deal for Trump, and he did not like the fact that an activist flag was being flown at the Stonewall National Monument, so he ordered the Pride flag removed.

This is the symbolic heart of this movement, so the order was a crushing blow to activists, but Trump said no activist flags could be flown in the National Park System, and that included conservative-oriented flags.

Stacy Lentz, the owner of the Stonewall Inn, for which the park in front is named, stated, “To think you can go to Stonewall and just take down the Pride flag — that is telling of the time we are living in. It is unbelievable. The flag is not just an abstract symbol; it tells L.G.B.T.Q. people, especially younger ones, that their history will not be sidelined again.”

This, however, created the opportunity for Sen. Schumer to grab some political points with one of the most ridiculous ideas I have ever heard.

All equal

Schumer took his shot this week to have the Pride flag raised to the status of Old Glory and our military flags, stating, "Stonewall is sacred ground and Congress must act now to permanently protect the Pride flag and what it stands for. Trump’s hateful crusade must end."

He later added, "The very core of American identity is liberty and justice for all — and that is what this legislation would protect: each national park’s ability to make its own decision about what flag can be flown. Attempts to hurt New York and the LGBTQ community simply won’t fly, but the Stonewall Pride flag always will."

I am just wondering if Schumer realized the can of worms this opens, and it is exactly why Trump made the policy in the first place.

This is a hill I am willing to die on. There is simply no way that flag or any other flag should be raised to the status of our national flag and our military flags. Government buildings and land are not the place for partisan activism, period, and it cannot be allowed.
