Congress is currently debating the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), generally the largest budget that Congress passes.
This year’s bill is expected to surpass $900 billion, but it will not receive the rubber stamp that it customarily does. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has already stated she will not support the bill, meaning that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has only two more votes to spare if all Democrats vote “no” on the legislation.
Greene is also pushing back against Donald Trump after the president blistered her on social media.
We all know what happens when Trump has a falling out with someone, as he immediately goes on the attack, usually calling them a “low IQ” person, which is precisely what he said about Greene, while also calling her a "traitor."
Trump posted, "The only reason Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown (Green turns Brown under stress!) went BAD is that she was JILTED by the President of the United States (Certainly not the first time she has been jilted!). Too much work, not enough time, and her ideas are, NOW, really BAD - She sort of reminds me of a Rotten Apple! Marjorie is not AMERICA FIRST or MAGA, because nobody could have changed her views so fast, and her new views are those of a very dumb person.”
This weekend, Greene appeared on 60 Minutes, and when she was asked by host Lesley Stahl whether she was still MAGA, she responded, "I am America first."
Then she took to X to respond to Trump’s post, responding, "I AM AMERICA FIRST. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
With Trump declaring war on Greene, she has responded in kind, pushing back on his policies and now openly criticizing the president.
When she was asked if there is “fear” motivating Trump's supporters, Greene responded, "I think they're terrified to step outta line and get a nasty Truth Social post on them. Yes.”
She then continued, "I watched many of my colleagues go from making fun of him, making fun of how he talks, making fun of me constantly for supporting him, to when he won the primary in 2024 they all started, excuse my language, Lesley, kissing his a-- and decided to put on a MAGA hat for the first time.”
I have stated before that I think Trump made a big mistake by calling out Greene publicly rather than picking up the phone and working this out. And when you add this pushback from Greene and Trump’s recent attacks against female reporters, this is a potential “woman” voter problem that Trump cannot afford, and Greene can still create all manner of trouble for Trump in Congress if she chooses.
Generally speaking, the NDAA tends to be passed right through Congress without much resistance, but if Democrats decide to play games, it could pose a real problem for Trump, because Greene has already said that she will not support the legislation.
She posted to social media, "These American People are $38 Trillion in debt, suffering from an affordability crisis, on the verge of a healthcare crisis, and credit card debt is at an all time high.”
Greene continued, “Funding foreign aid and foreign wars is America Last and is beyond excuse anymore. I would love to fund our military but refuse to support foreign aid and foreign militaries and foreign wars. I am here and will be voting NO.”
Now, so far, the Democrats have not hinted that they will try to block the spending bill, but with all the scrutiny Secretary of Defense Hegseth is now facing, they could try to use the measure as leverage to have him removed from his post before handing over a nearly $1 trillion check to the Department of Defense. Greene is becoming a nightmare for Trump, but he only has a few more weeks before she leaves office for good.
