There is growing concern around the country about Muslim communities enforcing Sharia law within the United States.
President Donald Trump really put a spotlight on this subject recently with comments about the mayor of London.
A move to take action on the topic was really put into overdrive after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed legislation to ban Sharia law in his state. Now, members of Congress, including Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) are joining the fight.
There has been speculation for years that some cities with dense Muslim populations are already secretly enforcing Sharia law.
Trump recently levied a similar allegation against London Mayor Sadiq Khan, stating, "And I have to say, I look at London where you have a terrible mayor. A terrible, terrible mayor. And it's been so changed, so changed. Now they want to go to Sharia law, but you're in a different country.”
Khan responded, "People are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multicultural, progressive and successful city, that means I appear to be living rent-free inside Donald Trump's head.”
London's leader added, "I think one of the advantages of having a special relationship with the USA is obviously when it comes to trade, when it comes to ministry alliances, when it comes to other areas we work close together, but it should also mean you got the confidence to call them out when they are wrong. I think President Trump is wrong in many, many ways.”
For several months now, there have been rumors circulated about EPIC City, which plans suggest will be a massive Islamic compound in Texas that would only accept Muslims, and a place where Sharia law would be enforced.
In September, Abbott signed legislation to block any such development, stating, "One of the issues at stake is the freedom of religion.”
He continued, “Another issue at stake is what’s called the right to contract. The fact is, religious freedom is a central part of the Texas Constitution. But bad actors like EPIC and EPIC City tried to use religion as a form of segregation.”
He concluded, “We will ensure that we have the laws and law enforcement in place to prevent attempts to build such discriminatory compounds in the state of Texas."
Roy and other Republicans in Congress are now feeding off Governor Abbott’s lead to introduce legislation that would deport any Sharia law-adherent aliens.
The lawmaker stated, "America is facing an existential threat -- the spread of Sharia Law. From Texas to every state in the union, instances of Sharia Law adherents have threatened the American way of life, seeking to replace our legal system and Constitution with an incompatible ideology that diminishes the rights of women, children, and individuals of different faiths.”
He continued, "Europe should be a wakeup call to America, showing what the spread of Sharia law looks like -- the erosion of the West. America’s immigration system must be fortified to counter the importation of Sharia adherents -- the preservation of our constitutional republic and its people depend on it.”
Democrats will tell you that this is just fearmongering on the part of Republicans, but I think some real concerns have been validated on this front. And I don’t want people to get riled up to go after Muslims, but there is clearly a radical element in our government that is slowly trying to change the makeup of this country. It is the government officials I worry about, not the people walking around on the street. It is why we need to fight to remove people like Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from our government and stop people like New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani from coming into power.
