A New York Times Games engineering director was found shot dead in a California parking lot Saturday, and police arrested his wife’s elderly parents on suspicion of murder within minutes.
Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
Dublin Police Services officers detained two suspects who had remained at the scene. Officials identified them as Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, a married couple from Dublin and McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were arrested on suspicion of murder and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
Fox News Digital reported that a sergeant driving near the sports complex at about 3:08 p.m. local time Saturday spotted a man lying in the parking lot and stopped to investigate. Around the same time, dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls about a shooting.
Responding officers found McKinsey suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. With help from witnesses, they identified and detained the two suspects who had stayed at the scene. Police said there were no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.
Detectives are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Authorities have not released a possible motive.
The City of Dublin stated that McKinsey was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot and pronounced dead there. Formal charges beyond the stated suspicion of murder were not detailed in the initial reporting, and no weapon recovery or ballistic findings were released.
Officials credited the public for the quick arrests.
"DPS thanks the witnesses and community members who assisted responding officers; their cooperation was critical to the swift arrest of the suspects," officials said.
A New York Times spokesperson confirmed that McKinsey served as director of engineering for New York Times Games and had worked for the company since January 2023. Dublin Police Services did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
Zhang and Chen, both 77 and of Dublin, were described by officials as McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Neither statements from the pair nor from counsel were included in the initial account. Witness names, the exact number of gunshot wounds, and the precise calendar date tied to that Saturday were not released.
