Calfornia Gov. Gavin Newsom is doing everything he can to raise his profile and make himself a serious player in the upcoming 2028 presidential election.
He has made some big moves in polling, but in most surveys, he is still trailing Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg.
Newsom's latest strategy appears to be to imitating President Donald Trump, but that is not working out so well for him.
Newsom has been all over the Texas Democrats and their boycott over new district maps being drawn for the upcoming election cycle.
Texas is more than likely going to eliminate five Democrat seats, and Newsom is threatening to take similar action in California against Republicans.
The Texas maps have already passed through the state Senate, but they have not been put on the floor in the state House due to Democrats leaving town to avoid a quorum.
In order for a quorum to take place, there must be at least 100 state legislators present, and roughly five dozen Democrats fled the jurisdiction.
When you look at state maps, there are none worse than California and Illinois, which all but shut out Republicans from real representation.
For instance, in California, Harris roughly won the state in a 60-40%, yet the maps in CA are 43-9 in favor of the Democrats, which equates to an 83-17% map.
If you want to talk about shutting out voters, it does not get any worse than that.
Yet, Newsom is threatening to draw new maps that would completely eliminate the few GOP seats that currently exist, effectively nullifying every Republican vote in the state.
Newsom gave Trump a deadline to urge Texas officials to stand down, which Trump apparently missed, so he made a Trumpesque post on X, which stated, “WOW! TOMORROW HISTORY WILL BE MADE. KaroLYIN LEAVITT WILL HAVE NO ANSWERS FOR THE SUPPOSED ‘FAKE MEDIA’ ABOUT CALIFORNIA’S BEAUTIFUL MAPS. PEOPLE ARE SAYING THEY ARE THE GREATEST MAPS EVER CREATED — EVEN BETTER THAN CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS'. DONALD ‘THE FAILURE’ TRUMP BE WARNED, TOMORROW MAY BE THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE. All CAPS, goofy nicknames… these are all Trump trademarks, but the president is the only person who has been able to pull them off.
This is nothing more than theater, which is all our political system seems to be about these days.
While I have openly stated that I do not support gerrymandering, Newsom clearly does not have any ground to stand on here, already having some of the most gerrymandered maps in the country. If the mainstream media had any integrity at all, it would be calling out Newsom, not applauding him for fighting back against the bad orange man.
