California Governor Gavin Newsom is back to playing victim again.
Newsom blistered Trump at the World Economic Forum (WEF) event in Davos, but he claims he was blocked from the US pavilion.
He spouted off plenty, however, also telling reporters that world leaders thanked him for his comments about Trump.
There used to be a golden rule in politics that, regardless of how much smack you talk domestically, when on foreign soil, you don’t trash the president, and you don’t trash the country.
That rule went out the window during Trump’s first term, and Newsom just revived it during Trump’s second term.
Newsom was very critical of Trump’s speech at Davos, calling it “remarkably boring” and “insignificant.” Speaking of the other world leaders at the event, he continued, “They needed to hear those comments, and to know that the people of America have that point of view and perspective.”
Even though your arrogance makes you think you speak for all Americans, Mr. Newsom, rest assured, you do not.
Newsom continued to slap himself on the back with the media insisting that leadership from the other nations thanked him for his comments.
He stated, “I heard a surprising number say: ‘I’m glad you made those comments.’ The exact opposite of what you might expect.”
When asked if he wanted to put names to those comments, he responded, “Absolutely. But I’m not, but I would love to.”
So, in other words, we are supposed to take the word of one of the most notorious liars in politics. My gut tells me not a single soul made that comment to him, as Gavin likely only heard that praise in his head.
Newsom also claimed that he was blocked at the USA House, even though he was invited by Fortune, the media partner for the event. He posted to X, “California was just denied at the USA House. Last we checked, California is part of USA.”
I would have preferred a more professional response, but instead, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly responded, “No one in Davos knows who third-rate governor Newscum is or why he is frolicking around Switzerland instead of fixing the many problems he created in California.”
The statement would have been far more effective without the childish nickname and actually ticking off some stats, such as gasoline prices, the fact that the state has had negative growth over the last few years, or that California is about to be swimming in debt.
This is where Trump’s communication team is losing the battle. They need to graduate from 6th-grade insults and start hitting Democrats with hard facts that voters can latch onto. It’s a lesson they'd better learn soon, or they are going to doom the entire party to failure in the next two election cycles.
