There is nothing like seeing a corrupt politician, or in this case, a corrupt politician’s wife, go to jail.
The second half of the Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) corruption trial has finally wrapped up.
After seeing her husband sent to prison, Nadine Menendez just found out she will be living on the state’s dime for the next 4.5 years.
Having grown up on the East Coast, I am very familiar with former Sen. Menendez’s long history of corruption.
The first charges leveled against him came in 2015, and he wound up getting off due to a declared mistrial. He had also received a slap on the wrist from the Senate Ethics Committee for accepting donor gifts and not reporting them in 2018.
Menendez got bolder as the years passed, thinking he was untouchable, but he was caught again in 2023 accepting foreign gifts, and this time, his wife, Nadine, was mixed up in the scandal.
Both of them were indicted, and now both of them are going to jail.
Menendez claimed that he was innocent, but the facts of the case told a different story, and he was found guilty and then sentenced to 11 years in prison.
U.S. Attorney Danielle R. Sassoon stated, “The sentences imposed today result from an egregious abuse of power at the highest levels of the Legislative Branch of the federal government.”
The statement continued, “Robert Menendez was trusted to represent the United States and the State of New Jersey, but instead he used his position to help his co-conspirators and a foreign government, in exchange for bribes like cash, gold, and a luxury car. The sentences imposed today send a clear message that attempts at any level of government to corrupt the nation’s foreign policy and the rule of law will be met with just punishment.”
This, to me, was a long time coming, as the former lawmaker had gotten away with obvious corruption for years. It also proved how much of a joke congressional ethics committees truly are.
Mrs. Menendez was also found guilty, and she was just sentenced to 4.5 years. Her plea for leniency fell on deaf ears, stating, “I put my life in his hands and he strung me like a puppet. The blindfold is off. I now know he is not my savior. He is not the man I thought he was.”
Don’t believe that for a second, as she was quite aware of what her husband was doing and how their lifestyle was being funded. Nobody is that ignorant.
The judge did not give prosecutors the seven years they wanted, but 4.5 years is still a long time, telling Mrs. Menendez, “You knew what you were doing, you were always purposeful.”
This woman is not a victim; she was an integral part of this hustle, and now she is going to jail. Good riddance.
