Donald Trump has made it clear that he will not sign another piece of legislation until the SAVE Act is passed, yet he cannot even get the entire GOP caucus on the same page, with one Republican voting “no,” and another refraining.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) has been against just about everything Trump during this term, and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) has been pushing back against Trump for months.
They were the two lone holdouts to opening up the floor debate on the SAVE Act, but only Murkowski voted with Democrats (the final vote was 51-48 to advance the measure).
The narrative by Democrats about the SAVE Act is utterly ridiculous.
I went more into detail about this during a report yesterday (click here to read it), so I won’t bore you with all of that again today.
Schumer, however, continues to make this legislation out to be the devil, telling the media, “Nothing is more important than defeating this dagger to the heart of our democracy,” reported The Hill.
Dems are pushing this bill as Trump trying to fix the upcoming election, but it is about making sure only people legally eligible to vote are the ones entering the voting booths, nothing more.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) managed to get the SAVE Act on the floor for debate, but I am not sure where it will go from there.
Schumer has already given the order that Democrats are not to bend on this one, stating, "Not a single Democrat will support the SAVE Act. It is a radical bill.”
He continued, "And if Republicans try to burn time on this legislation here on the floor, we will oppose them for as long as it takes,” reported Fox News.
There are some Democrats who support voter ID, such as Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), but he has stated he will not support the law in its current form. This is baffling, as there is nothing outrageous in the bill, and it surely is not what Democrats are portraying it to be.
Trump allies believe they can wear down Democrats, with some likening it to the 1964 Civil Rights Act, but Murkowski believes that will never take place.
According to a report on The Hill, she stated, “My concern is, it’s not only going to get a single Democratic vote, but it’s a measure that doesn’t really have a chance of passing. It doesn’t have a chance of becoming law. As we all know around here, floor time is probably the most valuable commodity that we have.”
But that is literally her job. She needs to be talking to moderate Democrats to find what will get them on board with voter ID legislation. Fetterman has expressed a willingness to negotiate, so get in there and talk to him.
Other than DHS funding, seriously, what are these people doing? Conducting hearings that have no real-world consequences. What is more important than securing our elections? Yet here is a United States senator not even willing to try. It shows the absolutely pathetic state of this government and how utterly useless it has become.
