Mamdani’s latest appointment stirs more controversy

Zohran Mamdani has been under fire virtually from his very first appointment.

So much so, he had an official resign before he ever took office.

Now, he has hired an ex-con to lead the Department of Corrections, and I can only imagine how that will sit with law enforcement.

Anti-Semites

When Mamdani was running for office, he was surrounded by allegations of antisemitism in his camp.

There were more than a few instances where Mamdani himself became open to criticism on this front, but the people around him were even worse.

There were also watchdogs being set up, who all promised to dig into every appointment he made, which eventually resulted in the resignation of Director of Appointments Catherine Almonte Da Costa after antisemitic comments were found in her social media posts.

She stated, “As the mother of Jewish children, I feel a profound sense of sadness and remorse at the harm these words have caused. As this has become a distraction from the work at hand, I have offered my resignation.”

More controversy

Another appointment by Mamdani that drew fire was that of Cea Weaver.

She was appointed to run the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants, but again, her previous social media posts drew criticism from the watchdogs.

In her case, she had described home ownership as a “weapon of white supremacy," yet Mamdani kept her at her post.

Kirsten John Foy, president of the civil rights group Arc of Justice, stated, “How can seemingly the same issue arise for a white woman and a Latina woman and the Latina woman be disqualified while the white woman is excused for her indiscretion?”

From con to boss of prisons

It was just announced that Mamdani had hired Stanley Richards to take over the Department of Corrections.

Richards had previously served more than two years on a robbery conviction at Rikers Island.

The correction officer’s union was not exactly thrilled with the appointment, with union president Benny Boscio stating, “The jails cannot and will not operate as safely as possible if the concerns of our members are brushed aside. It is our hope that Mr. Richards understands that dynamic as he takes on this new role and demonstrates a commitment to putting safety and security before any political ideology.”

I have yet to see Mamdani make a conventional move, but that was to be expected considering his past. He said he was going to change the system, and he is, just not in a way that is pleasing anyone. His administration is filled with antisemites and ex-convicts, so all eyes are watching and waiting to pounce.
