Mamdani pledges to phase out popular school program as mayoral race draws nearer

Right now, NYC mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani has a huge lead in polling, and with only a month to go before the election, it seems unlikely that anyone can beat him.

Now, Mayor Eric Adams has dropped out of the race, which should tighten things up a bit, but if Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remains in the running, it is hard to imagine former Gov. Andrew Cuomo garnering enough support to take Mamdani out.

That being the case, Mamdani is starting to get a bit bolder in regard to his plans for New York City if he becomes mayor.

Adams is out

This week, Adams bowed out of the race, but he issued a word of warning to New Yorkers.

He stated, “Major change is welcome and necessary. But beware of those who claim the answer is to destroy the very system we built together over generations.”

While he did not throw his support behind anyone yet, he did say that he plans on doing so very soon.

I am not sure how much that will move the needle for either Sliwa or Cuomo, especially for Sliwa, who has been trailing this entire race.

Polling

The recent polls still have Adams included in the electoral mix, but there is very little good news for the field.

For instance, a Fox News poll had Mamdani with 45% support and Cuomo far behind at 27%. Even if he takes the 8% held by Adams, he remains 10 points behind, with Sliwa still holding 11% of the vote.

Sliwa has been adamant that he will not leave the race, although that does not necessarily mean anything, as we saw Adams making the same claim not long before his exit.

So, for the sake of argument, let’s assume Adams endorses Cuomo, and all of his support falls in line, Sliwa then becomes the election buster that prevents Cuomo from posing a serious threat to Mamdani.

Taking some chances

Mandani has announced that once he takes office, he wants to end the Gifted and Talented program for young New York City school children.

He stated that he would allow the program to finish out this school year, but it would be taken out of play at the beginning of the next school year, which is surely a move that will lose him some votes among liberal parents.

Mamdani stated, “I will return to the previous policy. Ultimately, my administration would aim to make sure that every child receives a high-quality early education that nurtures their curiosity and learning.”

This makes no sense to me, as you are now punishing children who show a desire and the ability to get ahead. It’s just one more way he plans on putting the people of New York City under his socialist thumb, and I continue to be baffled that nearly half the city supports this man.
