Former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has moved into a senior advisor post at the State Department, staying on Western Hemisphere security work after her special envoy term ended.

Noem confirmed Friday that she is now serving as a senior advisor to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Just The News reported.

The change follows the end of her stint as special envoy to the Shield of the Americas, which expired last month ahead of the United Nations General Assembly. The State Department said Thursday she remains involved in the administration’s efforts to coordinate security cooperation across the Western Hemisphere.

In a social media post, Noem said the special envoy role “was always a six-month appointment” and that she had moved into the senior advisor position.

Envoy work focused on cartels and regional partners

The Shield of the Americas is a coalition of the United States and multiple Caribbean and Latin American countries. It was set up to cooperate on economic matters, anti-cartel enforcement, and related issues.

During that assignment, Noem held a meeting with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. In September she also held discussions in Washington with Ecuadorian and Colombian diplomats and took part in meetings with regional leaders on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

President Donald Trump replaced Noem as Homeland Security secretary in March, tapping Markwayne Mullin for that Cabinet post. Noem’s move into the State Department advisor role keeps her inside the administration’s Western Hemisphere security portfolio after the fixed-term envoy job concluded.

Specific day-to-day duties of the senior advisor post beyond her work with Landau were not detailed in the public confirmation. What is clear is the through-line: continued involvement in regional security coordination after a six-month envoy assignment built around anti-cartel and economic cooperation with partners in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Experienced officials who stay on cartel and border-security cooperation in the hemisphere give the country continuity where it counts.
