Donald Trump went after all things liberal when he took office, including Hollywood.
He announced an “America First” policy imposing a 100% tariff on all movies made outside the United States.
Now, one of the more popular names in Hollywood, Kristen Stewart, is claiming that she is going to leave Hollywood because of Trump.
Trump loves his tariffs, and he promised to hit Hollywood the same way he would every other business not anchored in the United States.
Trump claimed the film industry was being “stolen” by foreign countries, claiming that this massive tariff on foreign-made films would "solve this long time, never ending problem.”
As usual, Trump broke the news on Truth Social first, posting, "Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other countries, just like stealing 'candy from a baby.'”
He continued, "California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!"
After Trump posted, there were generally two reactions: outrage and laughter.
Many in the industry did not take the threat seriously, while others said it would crush the industry and demanded significant change if Trump was going to insist on hitting the industry with these tariffs. Various groups and actors penned a letter to Trump, which, in part, stated, “Returning more production to the United States will require a national approach and broad-based policy solutions.”
Of note is that some of the names on the letter were close allies of Trump’s, such as actor Jon Voight, who Trump appointed as a Hollywood adviser after taking office.
Trump ultimately walked back his threat, prompting California Governor Gavin Newsom to tell him he wanted a massive tax credit for the industry.
Kristen Stewart, who blew up in Hollywood after starring in the “Twilight” franchise, is now threatening to leave because she says she “can’t work freely” in the United States.
Her directorial debut is a movie called “The Chronology of Water,” shot in Latvia, claiming that “it would have been impossible to do in the States.” She then added, “But I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people.”
I am sure that statement will just have moviegoers flocking to see her films.
These people are unhinged. What is even worse is that people who play pretend for a living truly believe they are all the smartest people in the room. My opinion… I think people are sick and tired of being preached to by these divas.
