This week, Donald Trump was supposed to meet with top Democrats to discuss the upcoming government shutdown.
Democrats want the president to take back the cuts set to be made to Medicaid, which are meant to eliminate waste and fraud, and they want him to leave existing subsidies in place that are about to expire.
Trump decided that the meeting would serve no purpose, so he canceled it, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) went nuclear.
Trump knew from the outset that the requested meeting was likely to have no real meaning when it came to getting a deal done.
He stated, “I’d love to meet with them, but I don’t think it’s going to have any impact.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Jeffries were boasting on social media about the upcoming meeting, more or less saying they were going to put the screws to Trump to get him to cave.
We all know how that works, and Trump ultimately canceled the meeting.
With Democrats chirping, it was only a matter of time before Trump responded.
Rethinking the need to attend any meeting with Democrat leaders, Trump decided to call an audible, calling their demands "unserious and ridiculous.”
He added, "I have decided that no meeting with their Congressional Leaders could possibly be productive.”
I have to be honest and say that I don’t blame Trump for canceling because there is no benefit to giving in to the Democrats. If I thought for one second a concession would make the government more functional both now and in the future, I would call for it, but we know Democrats are an all-or-nothing party, so why even bother at this point?
Jeffries ran right to the media to whine about the bad orange man who just stole his big moment.
He stated, "The statement that Donald Trump issued today was unhinged, and it related to issues that have nothing to do with the spending bill that is before the Congress, and the need to try to avoid a government shutdown.”
Jeffries also stated, "Leader Schumer and I are ready to meet with anyone, anytime, at any place, to discuss the issues that matter to the American people and avoid a painful, Republican-caused government shutdown. Democrats do not support the partisan Republican spending bill because it continues to gut the healthcare of the American people.”
This is all just Democrats trying to put the blame for a shutdown on Republicans, and the media is buying into it. Yes, Republicans control the House and Senate, but they don’t have the numbers to pass legislation without Democrat cooperation, so any shutdown will be on Dems, not the GOP. If every Republican supports the spending bill, and Dems reject it, who is responsible for the shutdown? I cannot wait to see how our state-run media spins this one.
