ICE not backing down after Boston mayor’s rebuke of DOJ policy

As predicted, we are about to have a massive standoff between our Department of Justice and Democrat sanctuary cities.

In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that she was suspending funding to all sanctuary cities in this county.

Now the Democrat mayors and governors of those cities and states are pushing back, setting the table for the one showdown I have been waiting to take place for years.

Pausing funding

Bondi made her announcement on her first day on the job, and I could not have been happier.

The first Trump administration tried to take on this issue, but the test case was filed far too late in the term to come to a conclusion, and when Biden took over, his DOJ moved to dismiss it altogether.

This recent decree and a case against New York regarding its sanctuary laws have now assured us that the Supreme Court is all but guaranteed to have to address this issue during Trump’s second term.

The fact that Democrat mayors and governors have made it clear they will fight the pulling of funding means litigation, and that is a good thing.

Boston mayor fires back

Michelle Wu is considered to be one of the more progressive mayors in the country. And while she enjoys a 65% approval rating in her city, I have to say, I don’t believe it. I was just in Boston and talked to dozens of people, and not a single one of them supported her.

That aside, Wu announced she will be challenging Bondi on this, stating, "At a time when this federal administration is already causing so much fear and harm in our communities, these threats are serious and consequential.”

She continued, "Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration's failures. Unlike the Trump administration, Boston follows the law… You are wrong on the law, and you are wrong on safety."

As I have stated in previous reports, time and again, the Supreme Court has ruled that immigration is a federal issue, so I don’t see how the Court can allow Democrats to create rules that circumvent this authority.

ICE not backing down

Regardless of how the mayor feels, ICE ERO Boston Acting Field Office Director Patricia Hyde says she is going to go about her business of rounding up illegal immigrants and sending them back to their home countries.

She stated, "Unlike Mayor Wu, I was born and raised in Massachusetts. I grew up in Boston. I know what a safe Boston looks like, and this isn’t it."

Hyde continued, "While Mayor Wu is up, having a press conference and talking about not working with ICE, the men and women of ICE are out working, making her community safer.”

This is about as exciting as it gets for me in terms of addressing a controversial issue. While there is always a chance the Court could rule against the federal government on this front, precedent tells me that will not be the case, especially with a 6-3 conservative edge on this court. For two justices to cross over, well, that would be quite disappointing. Regardless, I want this issue settled, and while I am sure it is still months or even years away from happening, these moves by Bondi are going to force the Court to finally address it.
