Democrats have a very big decision to make regarding Zohran Mamdani, who won the Democratic Party primary race in New York City’s mayoral campaign.
Far-left politicians such as Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) were no-brainers in terms of supporting Mamdani, but the majority of the party is really struggling to fall in line with his campaign.
To that point, a Democrat congressman just came out blasting, making it clear that he does not see Mamdani as a future influencer in the party.
If you look at AOC’s original agenda, it is right in line with the freebies that Mamdani is promising to give voters if he gets elected to office.
So, it was no surprise to see her pushing his candidacy on the party last week.
AOC invited Mandani to D.C. last week, stating, "I think a lot of people just need to get to know folks before they issue an endorsement. I hope that this conversation can be constructive to bring the party together and rally behind our nominee.”
Mamdani’s backers had already started a war with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and several Democrats have come forward to break with Mamdani.
Mamdani and Jeffries clearly got off on the wrong foot, and the mayoral hopeful had a meeting with the congressional power player to try to end the beef and get him behind the campaign.
That, however, did not happen, at least not yet, as Jeffries’ office was lukewarm, at best, after the meeting.
The lawmaker's office stated, “The meeting between Leader Jeffries and Assemblyman Mamdani was constructive, candid and community-centered, with a particular focus on affordability.”
The statement continued, “Leader Jeffries and Assemblyman Mamdani discussed a variety of other important issues, including public safety, rising antisemitism, gentrification and the importance of taking back the House in 2026.”
While Jeffries skirted around the issue, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) was far more candid about his impression of Mamdani.
He stated, “Look, the mayor of New York has never, never, ever been the leader of the Democratic Party,” he said, referring to Mamdani. He continued, “Mamdani isn’t speaking for our party, any more than I’m speaking for our party. It’s a big tent. It’s a big coalition.”
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) was even more direct, stating, “I think he’s wrong on all those things. If he can’t tell people ‘globalizing the intifada’ -- if he can’t say that that’s antisemitic, then obviously he’s going to continue to add to the problem, not deflate it.”
Mamdani is like former Vice President Kamala Harris; the more people get to know him, the less he appeals to them. In recent polling, Mamdani is collapsing against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, with Cuomo tied with Mamdani in a three-way race and beating him by double digits in a head-to-head battle. Very soon, current Mayor Eric Adams and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa are going to have a hard decision to make. Stay in the race out of hubris or drop out and let Cuomo prevent Mandani from turning New York City into a socialist haven.
