Prior to the 2024 election, Fulton County, Georgia, D.A. Fani Willis became one of the key figures in the Democrats' push to block the return of Donald Trump.
Willis was going after Trump for what she said was election interference in her home state.
However, her case started to fall apart due to her romantic links to one of the prosecutors she tapped to lead the case, and she wound up being disqualified from participation as a result, a ruling that was just upheld.
In December 2024, it was announced that the “appearance of impropriety” by Willis was enough to have her removed from the case.
The court stated, “This is the rare case in which disqualification is mandated and no other remedy will suffice to restore public confidence in the integrity of these proceedings.”
This was a devastating and embarrassing loss for Willis at the time.
She has since won re-election to her post, while continuing her quest to take Trump down.
Willis was having difficulties on all fronts regarding her legal pursuit of Trump.
A month after the ruling to enforce her removal from the case, it was also reported that six of the charges filed against her primary target would be dismissed.
The ruling stated, "We find that the indictment fails to include enough detail to sufficiently apprise the defendants of what they must be prepared to meet so that they can intelligently prepare their defense.”
Trump’s legal team took a victory lap, and rightfully so. At the time, Trump was winning cases that obliterated the narrative that Democrats had been pushing about him for years.
Willis has since appeared before the state Supreme Court to have the removal order reversed, but her efforts have failed again, this time conclusively.
Steve Saddow, one of Trump’s attorneys, announced, “The Georgia Supreme Court has correctly denied review of the Georgia Court of Appeals decision disqualifying D.A. Fani Willis and her office as prosecutors in the Fulton County RICO case.”
He continued, “Willis’ misconduct during the investigation and prosecution of President Trump was egregious, and she deserved nothing less than disqualification. This proper decision should bring an end to the wrongful political, lawfare persecutions of the President.”
While Willis will not be able to handle the case personally, Trump is not completely out of the woods here. The case is lying dormant now that Trump is in the White House, but something tells me the day his term ends, Democrats will be coming after him again. This is a clear win for Trump, but it may only be a temporary one.
