Vice President JD Vance has hit his stride after being put in charge of the White House anti-fraud task force, but he just made a move that may define his vice presidency as well as the future of the Republican Party.
Vance referred Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for a criminal investigation regarding approximately $9 billion in Medicaid-related funds and $300 million in federal child nutrition funds, plus systematic retaliation against whistleblowers who tried to raise the alarm (via a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee report).
Democrats have dismissed the complaint, with many referring to it as a political stunt.
The problem here is that both can be true.
Walz has already decided to drop out of the gubernatorial race over the fraud that was uncovered in his state. The question, however, is whether this was incompetence or criminal on his part, and Vance just took a major roll of the dice that he can prove it was criminal.
The House oversight committee released a 205-page report on the fraud on June 8, 2026, alleging that both Walz and Ellison were aware of the fraud as early as 2019, but either ignored the signs or silenced the whistleblowers.
As you can see from the table below, the evidence seems overwhelming:

The numbers are real, so this is not a “joke,” nor is it being “sensationalized” as many Democrats are claiming. It is one of the biggest scandals in American political history, and it is only getting worse as more fraud is uncovered in additional states.
The monetary value of the claims is staggering, but that is not actually the most damning aspect of this report.
The real problem that Walz and Ellison are going to have is the warnings they were allegedly given by employees who tried to get ahead of this years ago.
The report claimed that the Walz administration "retaliated against employees who tried to raise concerns, going to great lengths to keep them quiet, including intimidation through regular check-ins with high-level agency officials and threats of military surveillance."
It also claimed that there were threats of military surveillance against state employees who reported financial fraud.
Keep in mind, this is just an allegation at this point, but if it is found to be true, this is an extreme structural abuse of executive authority.
Vice President Vance addressed the referrals on X earlier this week, posting:
“Minnesota state officials are not above the law, and if they facilitated fraud, lied under oath about what they knew, or harassed and intimidated whistleblowers, they must face justice.”
Democrats love to dismiss scandals as nothing to see, and we need look no further than how Democrats are ignoring and downplaying all the scandals related to Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner as proof of that.
He contacted numerous women on Kik, a platform associated with minors and younger adults, and reportedly still has an active profile with a picture of himself wearing only a towel. He has a tattoo (which has since been covered) of a Nazi symbol, yet, as a military veteran, claims he never knew the meaning of it. His financial reports show he is lying about his income as an oyster farmer. And he has demeaned a Purple Heart winner. But Dems say there is nothing to see and it is all nothing more than political attacks.
They say the same about Walz and the fraud uncovered in his state. For example, Ellison, according to The Guardian, responded to the referral:
“The people of Minnesota know the difference between accountability and political theater. They have seen the consequences of these policies first-hand. A partisan report and a social media post from the vice-president do not change the record – and they do not change our commitment to uphold the law, protect the public, and pursue justice without fear or favor.”
This is what Democrats do… they fail to address the actual substance of the allegation, attack the messenger, then accuse the GOP of acting in bad faith. Unfortunately, this works, as it is exactly how they managed to get the Hunter Biden laptop story buried until after the 2020 election cycle had been completed, as well as how they buried the Joe Biden cognitive decline during his presidency (I covered all this in a recent deep dive - click here to read).
At some point, however, the truth is so overwhelming that the dismissals are put aside, but it is generally too late to have any real impact.
But again, let’s remember that Walz dropped out of the running for governor over these allegations, and several people have already been convicted, so this is not something that should be dismissed as a political stunt.
Vance is literally putting his career on the line with this referral, as well as the future of the GOP, considering he is the frontrunner for the 2028 GOP nomination right now.
I have not held my tongue about the referrals and indictments we have seen, as many of them likely came at the request of Trump and were rubber-stamped by people who simply want to please Trump rather than advise him.
Former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James are just two examples of sloppy work by the DOJ. More recently, it was the anti-weaponization fund by Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, which has already crashed and burned.
This case has more teeth, as the fraud is well-documented, but it all comes down to proving that Walz and Ellison knew about the fraud, failed to act, and intimidated whistleblowers.
When you make a referral like this, you'd better be confident you have the evidence in hand. And if the DOJ acts upon the evidence, and based on Blanche’s record, he will, you'd better get the indictment, and you have to win the case. If you don’t, Vance’s career is done, and the GOP gets smoked in the 2028 cycle.
This is not a “joke,” as Democrats have stated, but it could quickly become one if a guilty verdict is not secured.
As it stands right now, Republicans are armed to the teeth to block both Walz and Ellison from running for public office again. Who would ever elect someone who oversaw billions in fraud, such as this, and failed to act early enough to minimize the damage?
But if the prosecution fails, Walz goes from incompetent to hero. The media won’t remember billions in fraud that took place on his watch, which means that it will no longer be top of mind for the American people.
This will be touted as more weaponization of the DOJ by Republicans, specifically Vance and Trump. Which means anyone associated with this administration is also dead in the water.
I want to be very clear… I am not saying Vance should not have made the referral. But I am saying he'd better have the clear evidence to get a conviction because we already have Walz and Ellison dead in the water.
Vance got his headline; now he'd better get the conviction.
