Sen. John Fetterman called himself a lifelong Republican by mistake at the Texas Tribune Festival, drawing laughs before he corrected the slip and stayed with Democrats.
The Pennsylvania Democrat was speaking on stage Saturday, Sept. 26, when an attendee asked why he does not simply run as an independent.
Fox News reported that Fetterman answered with a line that immediately broke the room.
"Because I’m a lifelong Republican,"
Laughter rolled across the crowd. Fetterman caught the error at once and owned it.
"I guarantee you that will break through. That will get clipped."
He then made clear he has no plans to switch sides. Asked about joining the Republicans, he said he does not have a reason to do it and believes he has no path there.
Fetterman has spent recent months drawing both applause and anger for working across the aisle. Many Democrats have grown frustrated with that habit. Republicans have openly welcomed him to join them.
He still calls himself a Democrat. Earlier at the same festival he delivered a keynote that criticized parts of both parties. The accidental “lifelong Republican” line landed because it fit the tension already surrounding him.
He has also appeared willing to help the other side in public. Earlier this month he dropped a video introducing fellow Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick, a Republican, at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention.
Fetterman’s sharpest break with progressive Democrats centers on Israel. He visited the country to show support after the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed more than 1,200 people and took many hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave him a silver-plated pager marking an operation that used pagers against Hamas leaders and operatives.
On stage he described what he sees as a warped set of priorities inside the Democratic “big tent.”
"But for a big-tent situation, it’s easier to be included in that big tent to say America deserved 9/11 or America is worse than Al-Qaida than being very proud to stand on the side of Israel."
That stance has made him a target on the left. Far-left figures such as Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan have emerged as progressive standard-bearers in contrast to Fetterman’s more centrist turn. Earlier this year Fetterman warned that if Democrats grew more entrenched in anti-Israel positions, he would leave the party.
Fetterman won his seat in 2022 by beating Dr. Mehmet Oz in a tight Pennsylvania race that helped secure a thin Democratic Senate majority. He ran that year on a progressive platform. Since then he has moved toward the center on crime, borders, and especially Israel, while still refusing to abandon the party label.
He left the door open for Democrats to force the issue themselves.
"If the Democratic Party votes me out or expels me, they’re always entitled to do that,"
No such expulsion has occurred. The senator continues to serve as a Democrat even as some in his party talk of cutting him loose and Republicans keep the welcome mat out.
Fetterman’s slip produced an easy clip and a long laugh. The harder fact is the one he stated without stumbling: in today’s Democratic Party, standing openly with Israel can feel like the riskier position than the alternatives he named. That is the real pressure sitting on the man who briefly called himself a Republican.
