Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) continues to push back against the policies of his party.
The lawmaker is now getting even more aggressive, putting pressure on Democrats to pass the continuing resolution (CR).
But Fetterman also just poured some water on Kamala Harris, saying he knew one key reason why the former vice president lost the 2024 presidential election.
When Joe Biden was in the White House, the Democrats tried to eliminate the filibuster, but it was only left intact because then-Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) voted to block the move.
Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) called them out at the time, stating, “Unfortunately, two folks decided to support the no-effort obstruction, as opposed to the talking filibuster. But I think everyone who’s staying is pretty supportive of going through the process of making the Senate work again.”
Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) also wanted to see the end to the filibuster, stating, “I’ve been here just over three years, and I’ve never seen an organization with rules like the United States Senate.”
He continued, “If NASA had these rules, the rocket ship would never leave the launchpad. So as changes to the rules come up, I’ll evaluate it based on the merits.”
During the 2024 presidential election cycle, Harris started to lose her lead around the middle of October, and she was clearly starting to panic.
She started to rely on the usual attacking points, calling Trump a “fascist” during an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
When Anderson asked her point-blank if she thought Trump was a fascist, she responded, “Yes, I do. Yes, I do.”
She continued, “I believe that Donald Trump is dangerous. As the president of the United States, the commander in chief, he’s saying to his generals, in essence, why can’t you be more like Hitler’s generals? Come on!”
Fetterman just ripped the Democratic Party for now using the filibuster to block the CR after their platform prior called for abolishing it, stating, “In that cycle that I ran, all of us ran on getting rid of the filibuster to enact exactly parts of our agenda. And now we can’t pretend that we love it or pretend we just were in a much different situation just a couple years ago.”
He also pinpointed the precise time when he thinks Harris blew the presidential election, citing the aforementioned interview, stating, “When Vice President Harris referred to President Trump as a ‘fascist’ … I knew absolutely we lost the plot at that point.”
He continued, “If you call the president or someone like a fascist, you are effectively calling the people who are going to vote for him … then they must be fascist too … or they support fascism and those things. And that is just not true.”
It will be very interesting to see what Democrats do about Fetterman when his seat comes up in 2028. This will also be a presidential cycle, which means high turnout, and any effort to remove him from office would likely wind up flipping that seat back to the GOP. Somehow, though, Fetterman does not seem concerned about securing re-election, at least not yet.
